Which monitor connector should I use? HDMI (not 2.1) or DisplayPort?

Just bought an Asus ROG computer. G15DK

Here are the relevant specs:

Computer:

Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700G Desktop Processor (8-core/16-thread, 20MB cache, up to 4.6 GHz max boost)

Graphics card : NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050 8GB GDDR6 : 3x DP, 1x HDMI

Monitor: ThinkVision P24h-10 Model: 61AEGAR3WW 2560x1440

I am not a gamer. I would only use the computer for streaming Netflix and other sties. If I disable in Windows the discrete GPU card would that reduce fan noise?

If I did not disable the GPU, would I notice a difference in picture quality if I plug the HDMI (not 2.1) cable into the motherboard versus plugging the DP into the GPU? .

If I do disable the card and use DisplayPort into the GPU would I still be able to see my monitor?

I would rather not waste money on a DP cable if there won't be a difference in picture quality for what I am using the computer for.

Maybe, but very unlikely. Streaming video won't use much GPU resources at all.

If your RTX3050 has a HDMI connector, then use that.

Since this computer has a CPU with integrated graphics also, you could in theory remove the nVidia card entirely and plug the HDMI cable into the motherboard connector. Just make sure in BIOS that the computer prioritize the integrated GPU or you'll get a blank screen.

The P24h-10 is a 2560 X 1440 @ 60 Hz monitor.

The rear panel HDMI port on the G15DK is supposed to be HDMI 2.0a.

It doesn't matter which interface you use, at those specs.

You just use your discrete GPU, you don't have to disable anything, connect it via the DislpayPort which is the most reliable connection between GPU and monitor you just have to select the DisplayPort input in your monitor settings.

Letting the RTX 3050 handle the video decoding causes the Ryzen 7 5700G to have to work slightly less hard during the video playback. As a result, you can expect the fan noise to be reduced if you leave the discrete GPU card enabled.

Depends on what you're doing. I doubt that you'd notice a difference in streaming Netflix.

The RTX 3050 is much more powerful than the Vega 8 graphics of the 5700G. Even though Vega 8 is supposed to be much better than most Intel integrated graphics (I'm not sure about the latest Intel Core Ultra CPUs).

(Userbenchmark is much maligned, but the difference is huge.)

You might have saved a few bucks by getting a model with the same APU (as AMD calls it) with no discrete graphics card. Especially as you're not employing a really high resolution/frame rate. Discrete GPU are desired for 3D gaming, or some kinds of photo or video processing software that use the GPU for acceleration.

I can't imagine not using the 3050. It's nominally a 70W card, and it shouldn't make a lot of fan noise even when highly loaded.

Only real difference between HDMI and DP is the max bandwidth supported and even then it completely depends on which version of protocol the plug and cable supports. It's a digital signal, so either you see a pic or you don't. At 1440p 60Hz 8bit color depth (16777216 colors) it makes absolutely no difference if you choose HDMI or DP. If you go 4k @240Hz 10bit colors (billions of colors) then the connection type and standard matters. Also then the cable will cost a fortune.

I was under the impression that discrete GPUs have their own fan. That is why I was considering disabling it.

The 3050 exists as a fanless version, but I doubt that you have one.

The CPU also has a cooling fan. If the integrated graphics are used, I wonder whether the CPU fan speeds up audibly?

There are silent PCs. Maybe you should have bought one.

Yes there exists completely silent/fanless PCs. Since this device is only going to be used for streaming, the hardware requirements are a non issue. Best of all, they're small too and some of them can even be tucked away behind the display if it has support for VESA mounts. I did not check what this monitor chosen supports though...

That is just another false myth. My Asus TUF Gaming F16 (2024) laptop has HDMI 2.1 with Fixed Rate Link (FRL). It basically means that the HDMI port on it is far more suitable for gaming than the RTX 4060 itself.

Your monitor can even be connected via USB-C.
Use an Nvidia and DP cable.
Just don't buy the cheapest cable.
