Why Beer Makes You Smarter

In one episode of Cheers , Cliff is seated in the bar describing the Buffalo Theory to his buddy, Norm:

"Well you see, Norm, its like this :
A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the heard is hunted, its the slowest and the weakest ones at the back that are killed first.
This Natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.
Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Who told you that?

A million cells die in the body naturally every second, and the body keeps replacing them.

While I get your joke, a healthy body needs no alcohol, no supplements, no pills. Fresh fruits and vegetables, active lifestyle, healthy lifestyle choices and deep sleep (even for short durations) is all that is required for a long, healthy life.

And you forgot that if alcohol kills the weaker cells first, then that also means that it weakens the healthy cells too (if not kill them), going by the same theory. So more loss than gain.

I have got old despite probably poor food, some alcohol and a pill or two when needed. All my cells could die earlier because of this, although I suspect genetics and a degree of luck are involved somewhere.

These deep thoughts might come to the fore occasionally but never when I'm enjoying a beer or two.

I usually have a 500ml can of beer every other day with the evening meal. A fizzy orange drink on non-beer days. This is not a hard and fast rule but mostly that. I'm not sure I'm any smarter for it though.

Not much of a beer drinker myself but I'm sure I have gotten some of my best ideas while drinking a margarita. But since I can't stop at just one, I never remember what they were. :think:
