A few hours ago I installed Dell update. I think that has something to do with it. I tried the obvious things and nothing is working. How can I get the volume to work again?

Was it your sound driver that you updated? You can try these suggestions.

First run the sound troubleshooter Settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-Beside 'playing audio' click RUN.
Make sure you do not see an indication that sound is muted

If neither of those works you can uninstall the driver in one of several ways.
1. restore from a backup if you have one
2. attempt a system restore which would revert the driver
3. Go to device manager-expand sound, video, and game controllers category
RIGHT click on Realtek-select uninstall-put a check in box to remove driver-uninstall
Restart. Windows may automatically install an older audio driver which may work fine OR
4. You can go here Support for XPS 15 9520 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US
Out to the right of Realtek Hi Def Audio driver click the arrow. Then click "older versions" and download it.
Install the driver you downloaded.

Any time you mess with drivers it is a good idea to make a full system image in case anything goes wrong.

I see what you mean now. The dashes had me confused.

Settings>system>troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>Playing Audio> Run

I tried troubleshooting. It didn't work. I tried the restoration point before the Dell update. It didn't work.

I clicked on 'Speakers' then clicked on 'Check for Driver Updates' then downloaded an update, restarted and it still doesn't work.

This is very frustrating. Do you have any other suggestions?

Make sure your speakers/Realtek audio device is set as your default sound device.
settings>sound>choose where to play sound>make sure speakers is selected as default

If it's not that and your sound is not not muted or the volume is not turned down I have no suggestions. Do you not have a backup to restore?
Are you positive your sound was working before you used Dell Update because if the update broke your sound a system restore should have fixed it. I use Dell Update as well, and I got a new Realtek driver today that works fine.

I played around with various settings and now it's working again so I'm not exactly sure what did it. Under 'Audio Enhancements' I turned it off, then back on. I think that's what did it. Thank you for your help. Not sure how to mark this as solved.
