why DP port of the monitor connection is recognized as hdmi in pc. what is the fix

Hi, I have two monitors and extended display option . The cpu has a display port and a hdmi port. The hdmi port is connected to the hdmi of the monitor 1 and the display port is connected to the other monitor in its display port. But both are recognized as hdmi port. The OSD monitor menu does not list dp at all. It gives hdmi 1 , and hdmi 2. both monitors are working as it should. I will have different tabs in two monitors. But why the systemis not recognizing the dp port as dp ports.both monitors are of same brand and same model of dell 24 inch monitors.I have intel uhd 730 video card and has trhe latest driver from dell. Similarly,I have the latest driver for both monitors from dell based on the monitor tag number and drivers for both are the same. Is there a fix for it. I have a doubt, and if i click hdmi2, the second monitor becomes blank.

yes. the monitor model is 24 inch dell S2421HN. I have a doubt of course. Since, I have enabled extended display , the tabs on one monitor is just extended and shown in the second monitor and the second monitor is not at all in use. But, it lits up during boot and if i click , it identifies 1 and 2nd monitor . There is no DP menu at all in the OSD of each monitor and only hdmi 1 is ticked. If i click the hdmi 2, which is also shown as on option in the OSD, then the second monitor becomes blank , while first that is connected with cpu works. I also enclosed the task view of the monitor for clarity. Ony desktop1 isshown in two monitors , and another one monitor is shown with + in middle

That monitor has 2 HDMI inputs according to Dell specs.

Those are only default names in the Dell Display Manager, just Rename to suit you.

Why should it with 2 HDMI inputs.

Hi, Helmut, I also noticed that now. But My desktop has one hdmi, and one dp port. I did not notice that my cable could be a dp to hdmi cable.Since, when i click hdmi 2, shown, one of the monitor goes blank and alerted that no hdmi 2. i do not know, why? here the confusion arises. thanks for the monitor clarification.

That’s correct. The Dell S2421HN has 2 x HDMI.

Why would they if they only have HDMI input?
Using a HDMI to DP cable will not magically enable DP settings in the monitors OSD

If you’re going to buy a DP to HDMI cable, I suggest you get one that is labeled “Active”

I bought 3 of these for 3 of my monitors that do not have DP, my Video card has 3 x DP and 1 x HDMI input.


The Motherboard onboard graphics card has 1 x HDMI and 1 x DP. The onboard card will operate with a standard DP to HDMI cable where as my GTX 1660 Super OC 6GB GPU will not. It only works with the above active convertor.

I run 6 monitors and care not of what the PC assumes the connection is as I know the performance will still be HDMI. Unless I am using a DP monitor, which I do not have.
But even if I convert DP (GPU) to HDMI (Monitor), I still expect the PC to recognise HDMI input as it’s eventually resting in the monitors HDMI input. So HDMI is the signal the monitor will send to the GPU/PC

As has already been stated those monitors only have 2x HDMI inputs.
One of them definately has to be connected with a DP to HDMI cable.
Which explains the reason why there is nothing about DP in the OSD menu.

hi, badrobot, then why clicking on the hdmi 2, alerts , no hdmi 2 and your computer will go to standby mode in five minutes as I have enclosed in the picture.
