In my settings this switched off. (Ver 22H2). So presumablly there is no point in keeping my 'Old Windows' which is taking up space on my M2 drive?

Is Restore Point a thing of the past?

You can turn it back on again if you wish.

There seems to be some "perverse force" which turns it on if you do not want them (that's what happens to me), and turns it off for those who do want it! Of course, this is random LOL.

Windows.old has nothing to do with system restoe points - that is there if you wish to rollback to previous version, but it only alllows that for 10 days. After that it is supposed to be deleted but sometimes something glitches, and windows.old does not get deleted but is of no use.

I just get rid of it using "disk cleanup".

Backup software is the way to go. Windows backup is being deprecated by Microsoft.
System Restore only partially works... sometimes.

They way to go these days is 3rd party backup software. Something like...
