A dongle is a good option if you intend to use it elsewhere in the future. Most cheap dongles are garbage though...plus it occupies an extra usb-port that you may need for something else.

If you're going to upgrade the laptop very soon, then I'd just live with the issue and worry about connection and network stability issues on the new laptop (if there will be any)

🤔 looking at the price at Amazon, I think that card is way overpriced...you should be able to get it under £20

Yeah, I know...I think the 2.4GHz band is congested. Moving over to 5GHz solves the problem temporarily but in the long run this will become an issue too when more people move over to that band.

It affects the signal too when multiple users are connected...stability drops like a rock

Example: I had a router that supported max 20 connections at the same time on 2.4GHz band. I had 25 devices connected. A couple of devices had very weak signal even if I was 50cm away from the router. When I disconnected all the other devices and shut down their WiFi, these problematic devices got full signal strength.

The band was congested.

It doesn't cost anything to switch exclusively to 2,.4GHz or also exclusively 5GHz and doing either of these *may* solve the issue. It will certainly help identify if changing the adapter or adding another will make any difference.

The existing Wi-Fi card has a much larger aerial than any USB device will have, and it is the aerial that picks up the signal ;)

If he uses an USB dongle that has external antennas, the signal will be a lot stronger than any laptop signal will ever receive using its internal antennas

So you have discounted forcing the existing adapter to use only 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
