-68dBm is perfectly usable. Can you get a stronger signal moving around your rooms? Do you know where the router is?
Next to my router I get -45dBm. Upstairs, I get less ie -80 or so.
Your iPhone probably has 5GHz and works OK. 2.4GHz travels a longer range so it should be better. This is why I suspect a fault in your laptop - card or aerial, who knows. I'd order a USB wifi dongle for £7 whether or not you choose one with a stick antenna or not - your choice.

Yeah signal is definitely better downstairs the closer I get to the router. It's a dual band router with both 2.4 and 5 ghz connections. Iphone is ont he 5ghz one. Thank you I'll pick up a dongle. Appreciate the help

So it's a 3 studio bedroom flatlet type deal with the router being fairly centred. Unfortunately the landlord isn't interested in any changes being made or willing to allow to set up a repeater. Know clue why. Will start with the dongle. Hopefully that'll help. Thank you!

I would personally go with external adapters as they will be more reliable in picking up signals than internal hardware.
