Will I be able to connect a pc running Windows 11 Home to a network that uses a Workgroup?

We have an older network at work - it's a small office that still uses a Workgroup, 3-4 Desktops running Windows 7 & Windows 10, & a few Virtual machines running XP (to support legavcy software - we use VM-Ware).

I am in the market for a new laptop for an employee and I see Costco has a good price on an HP that comes with Windows 11 Home pre-installed.

My question is this - will this new laptop (Windows Home 11) be able to connect to our network at the office that has a Workgroup?

Thank you

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Yes, you will. Workgroup networking has be a Microsoft standard since Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and remains unchanged in Windows 11.

You may already know from your Windows 10 machines that you need to enable SMB1 in Windows 10/11 in order to connect to shares on the XP machines. You need SMB 1.0/CIFS Client for Windows 11 to be able to use shares on the XP machines, and SMB 1.0/CIFS Server if you want the XP machines to be able to use shares on the Windows 11 machine. Also make sure that 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal' is unticked.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Thank you Bree - as long as it can access files on the Shared drive I will be happy. The shared drive sits on a Virtual XP machine, so thank you for sending those SMB settings :)

You're welcome. You just need the smb 1.0 client to access shares on a legacy machine like XP. I need it on my home network to access a shared usb HDD that's plugged into my router. Like XP, my router only supports using smb 1.0.
