Solved Will Windows 11 Respect My Local Account ?

Windows 10
I have a laptop with Windows 10 22H2 which has full compatability with Windows 11. I am getting a blue flashing banner in Windows Update trying to persuade me to update to Windows 11.

This I may do but I MYSELF have certain requisites. Widows 11 must respect my local account that I have always used, and not force a Microsoft Account upon me. I have no use for any so called features of a Microsoft Account, no syncing, no one drive, no Microsoft 365 etc..

I don't care if on setup if my current drive gets wiped but I suppose this would then force a Microsoft Account .

Which option would be best suited to me in upgrading to Windows 11 with the requisites of no Microsoft Account using preferably "official" routes.?

Thanks.

An update should keep your local account in tact. I've only experienced Windows 11 attempting to force me to a Microsoft account on a fresh install but the command prompt workaround still worked 3 weeks ago when I did a cloud recovery on my laptop.

If you have a local account it will remain as local after the upgrade.
The best way to upgrade is to let WU do the upgrade. It is always recommended to create a drive image backup or at least all your data backup

I agree the easiest way to upgrade is to let WU do it. It usually works flawlessly given adequate time and good hardware. But it will never run as smoothly as a clean install.

None. Manully configured so nobody except me can change any critical system files. (Don't ask how, it's probably against some rule somewhere)
This is a realistic view, Windows 8.1 through to Windows 11, approx 12 years. I have several Microsoft Accounts dating back to when they were Hotmail.
Windows 8.1/10/11 always with a Local Account.

1) MS Account is not forced if you update to Windows 11. You will still be on a Local Account. Just ignore the pushy stuff. So go ahead, no problem.

Just ensure decent amount of SSD free space and at least 16 GB RAM.

It is not a big deal because it is easy to go to Settings > Accounts > Your Info > Account settings and change it.

sorry for the delay in replying. if i let windows update update me from windows 10 to windows 11 24h2 will it ask me whether i want to keep my old files and if i say no with this say goodbye to my local account ?
Also at the moment I have read that windows 25h2 preview shares the same code as 24h2. so should i wait and do a clean instal of 25h2 when the public release becomes available, using a bypass tool to leave out the microsoft account.
My feelings are that I am on a slow adsl connection and would hope that the 25H2 ISO would be up to date and there would not be a huge cumulative update to instal as 24H2 had or is this me hoping for too much ?

Windows 24H2 update is 3.9GB its a large update.
i would wait until 25H2 is released and download the ISO which you can use to upgrade Windows 10 from
this can be done by just mounting the 25H2 ISO and upgrading.

the upgrade will give you the choice of keeping all folders and settings including your local account.
if you decide on a clean install then Rufus can make a bootable USB ISO with options to have a local account.
you can choose your user name for the local account and a few other options before Rufus burns the ISO to USB.

this way you also have an up to date copy of Windows if it is required.
also it would be wise to make a backup of all your data before you start the upgrade or install.
best of luck, Steve ..

It doesn't matter where the iso file is. Right click on the iso file and select mount.
It will create a virtual ODD drive (CD/DVD) on Explorer.
Go to the virtual drive and run Setup.exe. It will begin the in place upgrade.

Previously was using only local account. That local account works fine in Safe Mode. How can I switch to local accounts only?

More info

I didn't use or have a MS account on this machine prior to the in place upgrade.

When at login, it does say Other user, but in the field is asking for email or phone number. Does not work with local account, or newly created MS account. Local accounts are there, and work in safe mode.

It appears to be stuck between the two types of accounts. When I go to Settings /Accounts /Your info, the only option is to change the picture.

From your other thread you have an ex-company machine, therefore what I said does not apply. No doubt other complications that I know nothing about.
