Windows 11 Pro 24H2 26100.2454
Just updated to Win 11 Pro 24H2. All is working fine. However, I've got an additional 8.63GB of Update files that won't delete (see image).

I've run Component Store cleanup but it hasn't made any difference. Also ran it in safe mode.

It's a bug in 26100.1872 and 26100.1882. It wasn't present in 26100.1742.

I suspect that the space isn't actually used, but I haven't seen that verified.

OK thanks. Its added an additional 6gb or so to my Macrium backups. :cautious:

It seems mysterious. I went from 26100.1742 to 26100.1882 using a download from Microsoft Update Catalog. The file was smaller than 250MB.

No, at least not on my PCs.

An entry labelled "Windows Update Cleanup" at 8.63GB remains. Disk Cleanup will not remove it.

I searched for a means to fix that. It appears that it's a bug, the Microsoft will have to fix.

When I went from 23H2 to 24H2 today (In-Place Upgrade), it left a windows.old folder, which Disk Cleanup removed.
When all was said and done... 24H2 Windows was about 1GB smaller than 23H2

Use treesize to pinpoint the exact dir of the leftovers and use command prompt to delete them

This is because that update is not a cumulative update. It is an incremental update. Remember, with 24H2 cumulative updates as we knew them are a thing of the past. We now have cumulative checkpoint updates + incremental updates in 24H2. 1882 is an incremental update. What you saw is precisely the idea - to have smaller incremental updates.

It's not a bug. It has to do with RESERVED STORAGE and so this is 100% expected behavior. I guess if you want to consider something a bug, it's simply that it should report this as being a part of reserved space to make that more evident.

Why would you do this? If you start running low on space it will automatically evacuate the reserved storage. If you have the space, let Windows use it for a better experience.

The 8.63GB is listed in Disk Cleanup as "Windows Update Cleanup".

It wasn't present when Disk Cleanup was used, in builds 26100.1742 and before.

My Storage Reserve is 7.19GB at the moment. I don't think I'll disable it to see what Disk Cleanup reports.

Is all that consistent with your idea? In my ignorance, it doesn't seem like it to me.

Why is it after all these years that it shows up now?

My reserved storage is 6.67GB

Disabling reserved space made ZERO difference to the disk cleanup issue so yes it's a bug
