Win11 backup failed, Incorrect Function

Hi all, haven't been able to get win 11 backups working for about a year now with the error Incorrect Function once it gets to about 90% , i've tried changing the drive its backing up to and i've deleted all previous backups incase one of em were corrupted and messing up the new backup, anyone got a fix? only idea i have left is a fresh reinstall of windows, preferably no outside backup programmes please.

The Windows 7 backup you mention is deprecated by Microsoft and only remains for backwards compatibility. They recommend you use 3rd party software instead.

Noting there are quite a few excellent free and paid tools (the free versions are usually adequate for most users).

Two popular free tools are Aomei Backupper and Hasleo Backup Suite.

Paid tools are often Pro versions of the free tools but licensing and costs can vary from perpetual licences to annual licence based tools.

I would recommend trying out free versions first, and upgrade to paid versions if you find you need the more advanced features of the paid tools (I suspect the free tools are ok for 80+% of normal users).

Until you do. We're not saying you won't ever have an issue restoring an image made by any 3rd party backup app. Stuff can always happen. But for Microsoft to admit publicly that there are frailties in their own app, that's gotta tell you something. I didn't use it in my Windows 7 days so I wouldn't consider using it as complicated as Windows 11 has gotten. I've used the same 3rd party imaging app for 15+years. Safe to say I have restored hundreds of images during that time using it, both for myself and others.. I've had it fail me ONCE. Pretty good dependability average.
