Windows 11 23H2 vs 24H2 clean install size...

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty frugal with my storage and once I've tidied-up a fresh installation of Win 11 23H2, it typically takes up around 13GB of disk-space.

I've just done the same with Win 11 24H2 and a clean install, with the same extraneous apps/features removed, weighs in at 30GB!

Any idea why it takes up so much more space than 23H2?

Something isn't consistent. Only my virtual memory (pagefile.sys) use 16G and hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) is another 8G

30G is more consistent

It is necessary to compare not how much OS takes place on the drive, but how much it requires RAM.

I do not use hibernate and my bare Windows folder is 29gb with none of my appdata or programdata included so 30gb is consistent.

I setup two VMs with the April ISOs. Win11 23H2 Professional weighed in at 23.5 GB, once I updated the Store apps and did Windows updates. 24H2 Professional weighed in at 18.3 GB.

In my practice, clean-install is about 15 GB on my lenovo laptop.
No matter, from Windows 10, to Windows 11 22H2, 23H2, 24H2. no significant change.

my install

The last week, I "upgraded" my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 (all because Autodesk Fusion doesn't want to support Win10 after 2025), and the current size of Windows (11) folder is 29.3 GB.
I must admit that I just noticie a little bit slowness, but that's because of the poor coding of the "New" File Explorer and the rest of animations. It doesn't matter if you have the latest Intel Core i9 14th Gen [2024], or an Intel Core i7 3rd Gen [2012] (like me), Windows 11 will feel slow, beta-made, and buggy. Totally disappointing.

Just installed Win 11 Pro 24H2 on a Lenovo T490s laptop.

Turned off hibernation, reduced the pagefile to a mere 51MB, then removed pretty much all the extra Microsoft 'fluff' that I never used and also cleaned-up the Software distributions folder, ran a "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase" to clear more stuff.

Haven't installed any apps at all and this is what I have showing for the system disk in System > Storage:

System & reserved: 18.3GB (this compares to only 10.5GB for the Win 11 23H2 install on the same machine)
Installed apps: 7.55GB - not sure why this is so large - pretty much Calculator, Edge, Bing Search, Notepad and Terminal are the only apps showing.
Again, with all of my own apps installed the 23H2 install has only 5.25GB in the "apps" storage category...

I think you’ll find that if you use REVO Uninstaller Free, you’ll find many more in the Uninstall Apps section of the app.
