  • Staff
Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.

As the PC continues to play a more central role in our lives than ever before — Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity.

3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

7. Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Thank you to the Windows Insider Community

The Windows Insider community has been an invaluable community in helping us get to where we are today. Since the first Insider Preview Build was released in June, the engagement and feedback has been unprecedented. The team has also enjoyed sharing more behind the scenes stories on the development of Windows 11 in a new series we launched in June, Inside Windows 11. We sincerely appreciate the energy and enthusiasm from this community.

Rolling out the free upgrade to Windows 11 in a phased and measured approach

The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates*.

Sorry linw

This was my earlier post and it worked for me on my laptop with the unsupported cpu.

Win11 was not offered through Windows Update for any of my 3 Laptops.

I used MediaCreationToolW11 to download Win11.ISO on all three.

After Disabling the startups, uninstalling my virus app, setting Malwarebytes not to run on startup, and setting my vpn app not to run on startup, I was ready.

I copied the Win11.ISO file to the desktop, mounted it and ran setup. I let it download updates and the install ran smoothly without a problem on two of the laptops.

The third laptop had a CPU that was unsupported so I made the registry change approved by Microsoft (AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU ) and went through the same procedures listed above and it installed without a hitch also.

Best of luck to you, linw. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks, all, I know there are other more foolproof methods but I just wanted to try the simple MS offering.

Guess I will never know why this one won't work on my Elitebook.

Even though Microsoft recommends against installing Windows11 if your system does not meet the minimum requirements, I did it and it worked for me. I tried it because Microsoft provided it.

"Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on a device that does
not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements. If you choose to
install Windows 11 on a device that does not meet these requirements, and
you acknowledge and understand the risks, you can create the following
registry key values and bypass the check for TPM 2.0 (at least TPM 1.2 is
required) and the CPU family and model."
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

Posting up my Win 11 Upgrade experience - in case it may help others.

Pre-Upgrade system:
HP EliteBook 840 G4 (Unsupported 7th Gen Intel 2-Core CPU) ,
TPM 2.0 installed and enabled and all other MS Compatibility criteria met.
Win 11 Insider BETA v21H2, b22000.194

In Place Upgrade steps (Save User Data):
1. Created a Win 11 bootable USB stick using 'Windows Media Creation Tool' (initially it was stated as version .253 but installed as .194)
2. Performed an in place upgrade from the USB Stick from within Windows, Internet Connected, Local Account, share experience with MS and took all recommended settings.

In Place Upgrade Result: (Upgrade took about 45mins as best I can recall)
3. No issues, waivers or mentions encountered throughout the upgrade with regard to incompatibility state of CPU.
4. Upgrade completed without error.
5. Checked Windows Updates via settings and Cumulative update KB5005635 was waiting to be downloaded and installed.
6. Checked upgraded system - Activation still in effect = yes, Winver = no change, still at v21H2, b22000.194, Checked Windows Insider enrollment = still enrolled.

Despite the upgrade seeming to have gone well, it did not seem right as I had expected the OS version number to have changed after the upgrade. I then proceeded with a clean install.

Clean Install - 'Custom Install' steps:
1. Booted from the USB stick created as above, using the 'Windows Media Creation Tool' method
2. Performed a 'Custom Install' with Internet Connected and took all recommended settings.
3. (Through options available) was able to 'Skip' logging in with MS Account (enables local account instead)

Clean Install - 'Custom Install' Result: (Took about 40mins as best I can recall)
3. No issues, waivers or mentions encountered throughout the upgrade with regard to incompatibility state of CPU.
4. Upgrade completed without error.
5. Checked Windows Updates via settings and there were many (approx 20-odd) updates available, looked to be mainly driver type updates.
6. Checked MS Store Updates - many available (probably 30-odd)
7. Checked Installed - Activation still in effect = yes, Winver = no change, still at v21H2, b22000.194 (same as in-place upgrade), Checked Windows Insider enrollment = No longer enrolled and when opening the setting it displays passive banner stating :. " Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements recommended for Windows 11, and there may be issues and bugs that impact your experience".

Overall the upgrade to Win 11 has gone very well and my system has remained stable all the way through from joining the Insider BETA Preview about a month or so before the RTM. I'm happy with performance of Win 11 (especially response which is 'snappy')

The acid test will be whether my system receives the updates on next 'Patch Tuesday' but can say in the meantime that I've been receiving a lot of Windows Security updates since upgrading.

I had a couple of devices showing 'no driver' in Device Manager after the upgrade, but was pleasantly surprised when looking in the 'Optional Updates' section that I was able to resolve them!

Fortunately, I haven't (at least so far) faced any major issues - so thanks to all on this forum for giving guidance and sharing their experiences also.

Thanks also to MS for what seems to have been a great job they've done with this release - despite my system being downgraded to 'Unsupported' - but I'm sure I will get over that with time.

Footnote: No registry changes or hacks were applied in order to accommodate my system upgrade - they both just ran as expected.

Yes, 22000.194 is the current latest release version of Windows 11. Microsoft have for years been confusing everybody by having a different number for the version of the setup.exe file on the install media from that of the Windows it will actually install. They did the same with Windows 10, causing no end of confusion.

There is only one way to be sure of the version of Windows that will install, use DISM to read the version contained in the install.esd or install.wim in the Sources folder.

Well, this is from a red faced fella's Elitebook on Win 11. If you do it right, the MS reg edit works a treat!
@ThrashZone gets first prize for suggesting operator error I am ashamed to admit.
And credits to all you other kind folk who tried to help. But isn't it easy if you do it right? Download the ISO, dbl click it, click setup and away you go!! I got hung up on running the assistant directly rather than the Create option.

Wish I had an excuse but there you go.

I was forced to clean install both of my AMD machines as no manner of upgrade would work but the end result was worth it to me. If you are going to clean install make sure that you already have your windows keys available beforehand so you can enter them during the installation phase. The installer will default to the home version if you don't.

I had issues with the authentication server not activating my laptop install even though it recognized the key and selected the correct version. This forced me to the command prompt console to do the job. Just as with W10 once you've done this you won't have to do it again.

My desktop didn't have any issues authenticating its key so IDK.

Hi,
Third or forth times the charm I've read

I've found no ms write ups as easy to translate to real English lol

None of my AMD based machines would upgrade to 11 with all failing in the same place. A clean install was the best thing to do for them and restoring data is a snap when its backed up.
