Windows 11 available on October 5

  • Staff
Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.

As the PC continues to play a more central role in our lives than ever before — Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity.

Here are 11 highlights of this release

1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease.

2. With Start, we’ve put you and your content at the center. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what device you were viewing them on.

3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

6. Windows 11 delivers the best Windows ever for gaming and unlocks the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. With Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate you get access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11 for one low monthly price. (Xbox Game Pass sold separately.)

7. Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Thank you to the Windows Insider Community

The Windows Insider community has been an invaluable community in helping us get to where we are today. Since the first Insider Preview Build was released in June, the engagement and feedback has been unprecedented. The team has also enjoyed sharing more behind the scenes stories on the development of Windows 11 in a new series we launched in June, Inside Windows 11. We sincerely appreciate the energy and enthusiasm from this community.

Rolling out the free upgrade to Windows 11 in a phased and measured approach

The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates*.

October 5 is right around the corner — and there are a few things you can do to get ready for Windows 11. First, if you’re in need of a new PC now — don’t wait. You can get all the power and performance of a new Windows 10 PC and upgrade to Windows 11 for free after the rollout begins on October 5**.

However with the rapid W11 introduction of TPM ( a feature that's been out there for a few years) so quickly I get the feeling this is just a piece of hardware looking for an application. Ms could easily have started to phase this in with W10 to check processes etc. It's probably some bored developer sitting in a Lab on a Friday afternoon looking at a hardware list on a PC and seeing TPM and saying -- I wonder if we could find an application for it. !!!

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo - there is nothing different in terms of security between enabling TPM and secure boot in Windows 10 and doing so in Windows 11. They are the same. I don't think it was a developer thinking about an application for it, there already was, Windows 10. I think it was more of marketing thinking about how can we sell Windows 11 with no real new features except a minor (but welcome) facelift and appease our hardware partners before the holiday season.

There are a few bugs and changes I would like to see done first. I would like to be able to have more control of what the Start menu looks like. (I want to have the option of removing the Recommended section) for example. I would like to see the Taskbar ghost popups fixed. On my second monitor if I click the Windows Icon and try to do a search it crashes. There are a few other things that need improvement or fixing. All minor things and I hope they are addressed before release. I also see a lot of users that would like to be able to move the Taskbar to other places beside the bottom middle and bottom left without a reg hack. Other than that, I see Windows 11 as a worthy update from Windows 10.

Now from what I am reading those who are testing the versions for insiders makes me wonder how on earth they will release the complete new version by October 5th?? It certainly makes one suspicious as to what that will be like.

Similar wishes here on the start menu. Also on my second monitor the auto-hide doesn't work as expected. If I move the mouse to the bottom of the second monitor, the taskbar doesn't come out of hiding. In addition, I have to right click or click the center mouse button to bring it up. I would really like to see the clock in the taskbar on all monitors.

For applications: I use monitor color calibration and software to calibrate my monitors. This is failing (2 apps from different vendors) to apply the color ICC profiles. This has happened in the past with Windows 10 feature releases, which were fixed by a Windows update. I hope this can be resolved quickly.

Also I would like to see single right click in explorer made more robust (not having to right click multiple times to get a context menu). I have a workaround, but it not ideal.

Besides that I can live with the rest for a while (hopefully not a year though).

I have an idea that MS is trying to do almost the same thing with Windows 11 as they did with Windows 8. They wanted an OS that was geared for portable devices. Tablets and the Windows Phone for example. What I would like to see is for two versions of Windows 11. One for desktop and laptops and one for small devices like tablets. If they were to bring back the Windows phone running Windows 11 I would be in line to be one of their first customers. I so miss my Windows phone. It was so much better than any of my Android phones.

Yeah, once Windows Phone failed, they should have dropped this one-OS-fits-all mess and done just exactly that. Again I hate to use Apple as an example because people are touchy about that, but they do have MacOS and ios.

The test versions were never intended to be the real thing. MS has always been very upfront about it, although they never overemphasized it either. Why should they? They needed as many testers and test machines as possible. But come the real McCoy and bye, bye test versions, it is really that simple.

I am genuinely surprised about the hoopla in this thread.

Yeah, once Windows Phone failed, they should have dropped this one-OS-fits-all mess and done just exactly that. Again I hate to use Apple as an example because people are touchy about that, but they do have MacOS and ios.
Windows Phone never failed. The mobile OS was and is awesome. Only MS decided it does not produce enough revenue and that the competition was too tough.

Now from what I am reading those who are testing the versions for insiders makes me wonder how on earth they will release the complete new version by October 5th?? It certainly makes one suspicious as to what that will be like.

Well there are still 4 Patch Thursdays until release so let's hope many of the bugs are fixed by October 5th. :)

Hi there
Actually there is

secure boot only protects the booting issues -- TPM with its keys can secure THE WHOLE OS.

This blog describes some of the things a TPM can do -- There's Windows info as well

Cheers

So, after reading the MS info on release date. It sounds like us Windows 10 user will be able to upgrade to Win 11 on Oct 5th and have to wait till sometime in 2022 like it was originally said when the insider release was released. Am I correct in that assumption?

OK.. that would make perfect sense, to me at least. My plan.. to continue on the dev channel until Nov and then determine if I'm gaining anything from it. If I'm not then I'll clean install the RP copy of 11.

My PC/device is fully compliant so I can get updates when I install 11. I just dread all of the question we'll face here.. I just hope members give accurate information.

I'm at a point where I will not update my systems here at release date, but will continue with my USB, (Windows to Go),method of testing until I have time to update and rebuild my setups to fit in with the changes. I will update my WTG to the release version and add my apps, once I get it how I want I should be able to create an ISO of the working copy and use Rufus to install to the main system though I may do the laptop this way and upgrade the desktop using the traditional method

I use rufus as it's quick conversion/installation of a windows 11 WtG external NVME drive over Thunderbolt 3 took me around 45 seconds the last time I did it, and it now includes the option to do a regular install to the system drive the same way ( my system drive is actually a faster NVME drive too )

You missed my point, this is nothing new. Enabling TPM does the same thing in Windows 10 as it does in 11. Windows 11 provides no advantage in its use.

I've been In from the start of a lot of Operating Systems over the last forty years, the buzz is a lot less these days - I will give 11 a good trial with the heavy hitter Image processing systems I use and see if it gives me any advantage ... if it does and does it reliably I'll switch to it for my main usage
But the fact that they've updated the store, which I never use, or that they've changed the look and feel, when I only see the OS occasionally and Improvements for games that I don't play, all the the other things also give me very little
Same here, Nigel. There are a lot of things that I use daily that are no longer there, so I'm in "wait and see" mode right now. Although I am on the DEV Channel and have only Windows 11 on one of my laptops.

Yeh, I like to live dangerously, but vewy, vewy cautiously!
