Windows 11 available on October 5

  • Staff
Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.

As the PC continues to play a more central role in our lives than ever before — Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity.

Here are 11 highlights of this release

1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease.

2. With Start, we’ve put you and your content at the center. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what device you were viewing them on.

3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

6. Windows 11 delivers the best Windows ever for gaming and unlocks the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. With Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate you get access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11 for one low monthly price. (Xbox Game Pass sold separately.)

7. Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Thank you to the Windows Insider Community

The Windows Insider community has been an invaluable community in helping us get to where we are today. Since the first Insider Preview Build was released in June, the engagement and feedback has been unprecedented. The team has also enjoyed sharing more behind the scenes stories on the development of Windows 11 in a new series we launched in June, Inside Windows 11. We sincerely appreciate the energy and enthusiasm from this community.

Rolling out the free upgrade to Windows 11 in a phased and measured approach

The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates*.

Ready to elevate to 11? There’s never been a better time to purchase a new PC

October 5 is right around the corner — and there are a few things you can do to get ready for Windows 11. First, if you’re in need of a new PC now — don’t wait. You can get all the power and performance of a new Windows 10 PC and upgrade to Windows 11 for free after the rollout begins on October 5**.

We’ve worked closely with our OEM and retail partners to bring you powerful Windows 10 PCs today, that will take you into the future with Windows 11. Here are a few to check out.

Win 10 will be around for about 4 more years and you don't have to use 11 if you don't like it. You can disable TPM 2 or secure boot and you'll never get the update to 11
Commercial users will have the option 'download and install W11' vs 'stay on W10 for now' Commercial previews for Windows 11 and Windows 10, version 21H2

One of my machines is so old, it cannot have SB, and I am paranoid about getting rootkits into that machine, so I scan it regularly with Defender off-line and a portable scanner that can detect rootkits 'Emsisoft Emergency Kit'. On a newer machine, I wouldn't turn off SB (or disable TPM) to prevent MS from upgrading to W11, it is too big a price to pay.

I wonder if I upgrade to W10 Enterprise, will I get the above option that commercial users will have, 'download and install W11' vs 'stay on W10 for now' ?

I was talking about non commercial users when I made that comment. Commercial users in many cases have either an in house support staff or someone they contract to come in to work on their devices. For them the cost of either new devices or upgrades is a business write off.

As for upgrading to 10 enterprise.. I don't see any reason to do it. 10 Home is adequate for the vast majority of users.

I was talking about us non-commercial users too, and envy the option that commercial users will have.

And yes, I myself would pay the price for the W10 Enterprise version (something like E3 subscription for $7/month or E5 subscription for $14/month) if that gives me the option to defer the upgrade to W11. To me the few $/month would be more acceptable than turning off SB or disabling TPM. You may have a different preference, of course.

If you read the link it's not available to all commercial users, only those "...Commercial devices configured for the Windows Insider Program Release Preview Channel via the Windows Update Settings page or via Windows Update for Business policy will automatically be offered Windows 11..."

They have to be enrolled in the Business version of the Insider program.

Ah, good point!

At the time, I used a 'never10' utility to prevent/defer upgrades to W10. What the utility did, was to disable the system requirements for upgrading to W10. In spite of its name, the utility could reverse what it did. At the time, I did not see a problem. But a 'never11' utility that would disable system requirements for upgrading to W11 is a security threat.

So, there is no sensible option to defer the upgrade to W11 then?

(Before people are jumping up and down, let me say, that I am not against W11. I am just concerned about bugs in early releases, in any early release, for that matter)

On release it should be offered to compatible machines as an optional upgrade. I would expect to see Windows Update with a similar banner to the commercial preview one - complete with it's 'Stay on Windows 10' option.

The word 'shall' is not necessarily any more accurate...

Being an AI-driven phased rollout "based on intelligence models" it will not be offered to every compatible machine on day one - the newest, most compatible will be first to see it. Even MS say you may not see it offered until next year. From post #1:

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
Even June next year means only 9 months worth of debugging after RTM. Maybe/hopefully it is enough for the 1 eligible machine that I have, it is fortunately not an important machine, but I am still not pleased.

Luckily, none of my other machines are eligible hence safe from a surprise and unwanted upgrade to W11 :) For the first time ever and perhaps the only time ever that I am glad to have older machines

Who needs Win Eleven - no one I know, I think this will cost Microsoft in declining Windows software sales , which, I'm sure they're going to make up for 10 fold or more in their investments in hardware manufacturing companies - What a sneeky backdoor way to do business!

Maybe the COVID pandemic, with its boost in PC sales, has already fattened their coffers. But they must be looking to a return to "normal", with consumers switching to smartphones and tablets.

I see this mass-marketable benefit for the end user: W11 running Android natively on very common 15" laptops, i.e. a bigger screen than tablets and a physical keyboard that does not require switching like software keyboards do. I dare say that for billions, Android navigation is more intuitive than Windows navigation. I wouldn't be surprised if W11 users routinely start with Android > click the Google icon > browse the web OR start with Android > click the WhatsApp icon > chat with mom

Will we see iOS running natively on W11?

Android? Apps, apps, and more apps. Android has never seemed like a real operating system for me.

I've used Windows since 3.1.1. Before that, MacOS up through 7.x, VMS, and a little Solaris (Sun's Unix).

I guess "intuitive" means whatever you're accustomed to.

Maybe it's partly because I'm too old to comfortably use those tiny (smart phone) screens, even on my OnePlus 7t, which is not a small phone. My primary PC system uses a 32" 2160p monitor. I'm not sure that I feel a strong desire to run Android apps on the big screen. (It's not a touchscreen.) I admit to using BlueStacks (an Android emulator) in the past, but that was driven by need, not desire.

So, given the Insiders Dev build's kernel has not been updated, I guess we are staying on kernel 10.0 - not surprising as we are dealing with Win 10X as base.

Programmers will need to change their code to read the build rather than the version's major/minor numbers as in the past.

Code:
if (System.Environment.OSVersion.Version.Build >= 22000)
    return "Hello Windows 11 world";

Intuitive to most people on the globe in the sense of 'the largest installed base of any operating system'

... and 'Google Play Store features over 3 million apps' > Android can't be that bad ...

Edit: BTW, a $300 laptop that would run W11, Android, iOS would be a BIG bargain

Yeah Android is not that bad at all. And it is getting more and more desktop-like features every day. First Samsung introduced DeX and now other companies are following this path several years later.

It is the old and poorly architectured apps that are bad, not the OS itself. Many apps does not even support window scaling or any of the modern Android features. But those apps that are up to date with latest Android features are awesome used both on the phone screen as single app, in split screen or even on a 32" 1440p monitor while multitasking using mouse and keyboard.

I have some apps that will only work on an android phone, including my TP-Link home security cameras, (it works independently and all recordings are saved to internal looped 128GB Micro SD cards so the phone covers display of content - Live and stored when I'm home or away) I have been using LDplayer (an android emulator for games players), or the MyPhone App from Microsoft to display the multi camera feed but both of these apps are not ideal the Emulator uses a Virtual OS and the MyPhone is just a memory hog

It will be nice to see if Microsoft have sorted out the waste for the internalised option

Obviously in the US The Iphone and Ipad are the devices of choice but Android have over 75% of the world market and this was, the last time I checked still increasing.

It was also made up of Newer models whereas, with the the apple devices, due to their usually higher costs, users tend to use older models and not update as often.

Windows 10 enterprise is only available via the Volume licence or other business subscription

The E3 and E5 plans just include office,

To purchase enterprise for windows 10 or 11 you will need to purchase a volume licence, the minimum, when I last was involved with this, was 10 seats (copies) - alternatively there are development packages that contain Enterprise, Workgroup, education, even Home of the operating systems and variations of Office, Server and server software - either of these packages are considerably more than $14 / month hundreds or thousands of dollars dependent on the number of seats and packages

Thanks, further reading says that the W10 Enterprise conjecture about avoiding a surprise upgrade to W11 (and getting a 'stay on W10' option) appears to be true only for business insiders.

BTW, I read posts on this forum about people who paid for W10 Pro but discovered W10 Enterprise on their machines.

I suppose it depends on the source of the hardware, there are a lot of pirated copies of Enterprise out in the "wild" using either the grace period to fool buyers or more often the use of the Fake Key Management Server [KMS] method - Of Course the fact that the system has been Hacked about to add the fake activation often means that other hacks are also in place for other criminal purposes
