Windows 11 available on October 5

  • Staff
Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.

As the PC continues to play a more central role in our lives than ever before — Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity.

Here are 11 highlights of this release

1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease.

2. With Start, we’ve put you and your content at the center. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what device you were viewing them on.

3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

6. Windows 11 delivers the best Windows ever for gaming and unlocks the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. With Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate you get access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11 for one low monthly price. (Xbox Game Pass sold separately.)

7. Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Thank you to the Windows Insider Community

The Windows Insider community has been an invaluable community in helping us get to where we are today. Since the first Insider Preview Build was released in June, the engagement and feedback has been unprecedented. The team has also enjoyed sharing more behind the scenes stories on the development of Windows 11 in a new series we launched in June, Inside Windows 11. We sincerely appreciate the energy and enthusiasm from this community.

Rolling out the free upgrade to Windows 11 in a phased and measured approach

The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates*.

Ready to elevate to 11? There’s never been a better time to purchase a new PC

October 5 is right around the corner — and there are a few things you can do to get ready for Windows 11. First, if you’re in need of a new PC now — don’t wait. You can get all the power and performance of a new Windows 10 PC and upgrade to Windows 11 for free after the rollout begins on October 5**.

We’ve worked closely with our OEM and retail partners to bring you powerful Windows 10 PCs today, that will take you into the future with Windows 11. Here are a few to check out.

I suppose it depends on the source of the hardware, there are a lot of pirated copies of Enterprise out in the "wild" using either the grace period to fool buyers or more often the use of the Fake Key Management Server [KMS] method - Of Course the fact that the system has been Hacked about to add the fake activation often means that other hacks are also in place for other criminal purposes
I updated my old laptop from Home to Pro through the MS Store and instead of Pro the Enterprise version was installed. Wanting to be legal I called MS support and they had me change the key to the generic Pro key.

That reminds me of my beloved little Netbook that came with W7 Starter which worked very, very well. But one day, I had to reinstall the OS, and the license key on the bottom sticker was no longer visible. I tussled in vain with MS but luckily the free upgrade to W10 came up which also worked very, very well at the time, to my very big surprise. Unfortunately, it became too sluggish over time, and I had to recycle it (and no, no Linux for me)

In my experience unless you are going to be running in a Client Server environment there is nothing to sway a user towards Enterprise the only extras are related to remote management and server access. Most of this can be achieved with addons to a standard Pro install

Luckily, none of my other machines are eligible hence safe from a surprise and unwanted upgrade to W11 :) For the first time ever and perhaps the only time ever that I am glad to have older machines

Safe from unwanted Win 11 upgrades, yes. Safe from Windows 10 updates that are designed to sabotage Windows 10's performance, features or user experience, that remains to be seen. It's not unheard of, Nvidia has been caught downgrading performance of older card architectures with drivers, I wouldn't put it past Microsoft either. Most of us here are already aware of their "dark patterns". Of course this could happen to Windows 10 without any intent on Microsoft's part, when they have two versions of Windows to maintain with very limited human resources.

Win 10 will be around for about 4 more years and you don't have to use 11 if you don't like it. You can disable TPM 2 or secure boot and you'll never get the update to 11
Hi there
Not if you run it as a Virtual Machine !!!!!! These can have sec boot and emulated TPM in the "Virtual Hardware" even on basic MBR BIOS only machines. The ISO will continue for the foreseeable future to be available via UUPDUMP so you can still get the iso even if using Ms's MCT start's checking for "eligiable hardware" before allowing download and creation.

I'm comfortable enough with 11 beta that I likely will install the RTM on the 6th of Oct. Unless the beta builds become a huge mess and in that case I might go back to 10.

At the moment I'm pretty underwhelmed with W11, it doesn't seem to give me much to make me want to jump in head first. I'll keep a copy of the RP or Release version running to play with but not switch over straight away.

I've got a couple or three Image editors with new major releases between now and the Holiday Season Plus I'm expecting a full set of On1's 2022 Photo plugins and some other stuff around the same time. I'll wait until I'm ok with them, and move to W11 after I'm happy my current software and the new ones work properly though I don't expect that many issues given that there are not many real changes under the hood

I'm of a similar mind. I remember the hoopla over Win 95 and being pumped at the time so that I stayed at a CompUSA past midnight because they could not begin selling until then. Spent a lot of money that night on 95, Office 95, Plus Pack, Norton Security 95 I think it was called. New hardware can get a little blood flowing now but an OS? Nah.

For me it's enough of a change to make it worth giving it a new name, but not enough to risk it being too full of new bugs.

To that end I'll be upgrading the general purpose machine I use most often to 11 on release. Well actually, restoring its W10 system image to a new machine that's fully W11 compliant, then upgrading that. I've already tested the migration/upgrade process - it's System One below. I'll wipe it and repeat the migration on release.

The rest of my machines can stay on W10 for now while I see how I get on with 11, no rush as it's in support until 2025. Most (all?) of them would need to be migrated to newer hardware anyway if I wanted to upgrade them to W11.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Getting into Win 11 enlightened me about TPM, Secure Boot, Virtualization, and Memory Integrity. These had not been turned on with my Win 10 install, so my security has been improved by Win 11.
I am sure there is more to come in this area with future Win 11 upgrades. This could be one of the reasons for setting minimum requirements. Unsupported PC's may be able to run Win 11 now but maybe not in the future when these enhancements are introduced.

I'm comfortable enough with 11 beta that I likely will install the RTM on the 6th of Oct. Unless the beta builds become a huge mess and in that case I might go back to 10.
I have only seen minor bugs so I see no reason not to update my wife's laptop once Windows 11 is released.
