Windows 11 available on October 5

  • Staff
Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.

As the PC continues to play a more central role in our lives than ever before — Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity.

Here are 11 highlights of this release

1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease.

2. With Start, we’ve put you and your content at the center. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what device you were viewing them on.

3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

6. Windows 11 delivers the best Windows ever for gaming and unlocks the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. With Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate you get access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11 for one low monthly price. (Xbox Game Pass sold separately.)

7. Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Thank you to the Windows Insider Community

The Windows Insider community has been an invaluable community in helping us get to where we are today. Since the first Insider Preview Build was released in June, the engagement and feedback has been unprecedented. The team has also enjoyed sharing more behind the scenes stories on the development of Windows 11 in a new series we launched in June, Inside Windows 11. We sincerely appreciate the energy and enthusiasm from this community.

Rolling out the free upgrade to Windows 11 in a phased and measured approach

The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates*.

October 5 is right around the corner — and there are a few things you can do to get ready for Windows 11. First, if you’re in need of a new PC now — don’t wait. You can get all the power and performance of a new Windows 10 PC and upgrade to Windows 11 for free after the rollout begins on October 5**.

I'm really quite curious as to why you would still primarily use Windows 7?
I'm also using W7 on all of my four Laptops, who serve as NAS, music/video player, casual browser, streaming, workshop pdf archive, sound studio recording, etc etc
They all work extremely well so why on earth should I upgrade?
And MOST OF ALL: I love the Win 7 Explorer with its beautiful style, colorful icons, perfect usability and excellent ergonomics.
Even my main PC would have stayed on W7, but since more and more games (starting with Crysis Remastered, Far Cry 6,..) are demanding DX12, I recently had to set it up fresh with W10 Enterprise LTSC to at least avoid all those crap apps. Luckly with Stardock WindowBlinds and the "7 for 10" skin, plus some individual tweaks, I was able to bring back the W7 look and feel on that machine.

And no, I am NOT concered about security. Why?
- I keep a lot of monitoring programs running (EventViewer, Performance Viewer, OpenHardwareMonitor Gadget, HDD Led), so any suspicious activity would immediately be detected
- I don*t click on "Congratulations! You have just won an iPhone11!" links or likewise
- I am pretty sure which folders and registry entries to check from time to time
- made tons of backups regularily, and keep them physiacally separated from my rig
- new SW isn't bugfree, otherwise W10 wouldn't have security updates galore

Anyone else feeling the same here or am I the lone tiger with my opinion? :)

This is an older PC for testing new OS,
Furthermore: 4 Dell/HP laptops on Win7 Ultimate x64, used for NAS, Media server, browsing, workshop and sound studio
9 minutes into RTM (midnight local time) WU on my laptop indicated that W!! can be downloaded and installed. There was a surprisingly quick download from 0% to 100% but then remained stuck at 'download 100%' although I rebooted a couple of times. Even nightowl me then went to bed and abracadabra now I have been playing with W11 for a little over a week.

What I like the most: 'Settings' is now user oriented, which complements the technically oriented 'Control Panel' very well. I hope both will co-exist indefinitely, because I (and perhaps others) see our devices sometimes from a user perspective, and sometimes from a technical perspective. Thus, having both 'Settings' and 'Control Panel' makes it easy to find things, especially things that you need only once in a blue moon.

>>> I still miss a one-click 'office productivity profile' for my main computer. Others may be interested in a one-click 'gamer profile', 'lifestyle profile', 'creativity profile', etc. as a starting point for further personalization if so desired.

What I dislike the most: the taskbar can't be relocated to the left side of the screen. I hope that this will be made possible in the future.

Overall appearance of the OS: I can't say that I particularly like or dislike the GUI, it's OK. The ergonomical issue of needing to display many, many distinct things could be made to harmonize with the aesthetics a bit better, I think. But useability of the GUI is likely the higher priority.

Under the hood, I like the enhanced security features, MS again did an excellent job of hiding the complexities of security, continues to amaze me, in fact, in this regard.

Future for my other, more important Windows computers: I will merely monitor W11 for a couple of years (the W11 laptop will serve as a reference point for what I see elsewhere) before considering it for my other computers.

Good luck to all!

My Dell laptop can run Windows 11 per the PC Health Check tool. After checking the Dell knowledge base, it states that my system was tested for upgrading to Windows 11. Dell recommends using WU to do the upgrade.
You'll see the same recommendation from Microsoft, and I'd recommend that too. The reasoning is that availability of the upgrade in WU depends on more factors than just the compatibility of the hardware. Known issues with some 3rd-party software will also be taken into account. MS will place a block on such machines being offered 11 until they and/or the 3rd-party have resolved the issues.

A clean install would of course not be subject to those issues and would be safe to do. An in-place upgrade would bypass the checks for know software compatibility issues. It may well be that there are no such issues to worry about, but if there were it would be a riskier way to get the upgrade. Unless you're prepared to deal with the potential problems, it's safest to wait for WU to offer it to your PC.

I am totally with you on the second para. Since the first Details of “ security improvements” , I felt offended. MS have the right to do as they wish with their OS, but security, related very closely with hardware rather than the OS, I regard as my backgarden. If I wish to be careless ( I am not) that is my prerogative. Then to link it with the compulsory requirement of having the latest and best cpu to even install windows 11, was outrageous.

Sorry, but that's not accurate. In Intel terms the initial requirement was for a "Series 8 CPU or later", but Intel CPUs are currently at Series 11 so series 8 (3 years or more old) could hardly be described as the latest or best. The fact that there may still be (or have been) 'newer' PCs on the market using older CPUs, making them non-compliant with the new Windows 11 specs would be down to the PC manufacturers/OEM assemblers keeping their costs down as many customers will probably consider whether a system comes with an i3. i5, i7, or i9 CPU; but is less likely question which Series (how old) the processor is.

I don't know how far back TPM 2.0 support goes. My cheap laptop has a Gen6 CPU, but it has a 2.0 firmware TPM.

Hi,
Must not be too easy to exploit otherwise I would of already
Unsupported is just a long deserved holiday from researching pisspoor ms updates.
IMHO, with such a small percentage of Windows 7 user I don't think it would worth the time for any major exploits. It would be more of a target for kids to show off to their friends that they can hack a computer.

My Dell laptop can run Windows 11 per the PC Health Check tool. After checking the Dell knowledge base, it states that my system was tested for upgrading to Windows 11. Dell recommends using WU to do the upgrade. So I'll just wait until I have the option on WU to upgrade that system. I was a little hesitant to upgrade, but I feel safer doing it now that I've done a little more research.
If you really want to install Win 11 just make a backup image and download the ISO.

When can I get the upgrade?

Microsoft will offer the upgrade to Windows 11 in multiple phases between October 5th, 2021 and Spring of 2022.

Drivers for Dell computers tested for upgrade to Windows 11 are available for download at dell.com/support
Windows 11 Upgrade Schedule
PhaseStart DateEligible SystemsHow can I get the upgrade?
1October 2021Microsoft will offer the upgrade to a limited number of devices based on telemetry data.Click Settings -> Windows Update -> Check for Windows Update. The upgrade will appear when made available for your system by Microsoft.
2Early 2022Systems that have been purchased in CY 2021 with Windows 10 factory installed.Upgrade will be offered in the Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE).
3Spring 2022All eligible Dell computers tested for upgrade to Windows 11Windows Update will offer the upgrade automatically when available for the system.
Note: Systems with Windows 10 20H1 or older must upgrade to 21H1 to receive the Windows 11 upgrade offer.

This was from the Dell Knowledge base. I wonder if MS will really follow this schedule.

I'm sure most have updated by other means, whether using the update assistant or with an iso. Although my system was tested, I'm not in a big rush to update, but eventually will.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. I make this suggestion just in case something goes wrong and your registry gets corrupted during install or something. . . You never know what can happen. I don't save anything to my C drive. The only things I have to back up are my browser passwords and bookmarks. . . Everything else gets saved to an extra drive. I don't mind reinstalling everything back after a clean/fresh install. To each their own though. . . .. :)
Unless someone is having problems a clean install is not needed.
