Not to be (overly) cynical, but what's the incentive for search engines like Startpage and DuckDuckGo if they're not doing something with your Internet habits? I can't believe they do this entirely out of the goodness of their hearts. I gave up thinking anything I do on the Internet is private years ago.

There is also Search Bar Connector on the MS store which does the same, not that I have ever used the search bar for web searches, I Use Open Shell and the Internet search on that I have disabled.
I use the browser, in my case Firefox it's what it's there for.

The Search Bar Connector allows you to use the Cortana search bar in Windows 10 in connection with your preferred default browser. The search term that Cortana would normally send to the Edge browser will be send to the app which then will send the request to your default browser. The whole process takes only few milliseconds. In addition, the app extends the functionality of the search bar by the possibility to use shortcuts. You only have to write your search query in the search bar and add at the end the shortcut for the chosen search engine. Otherwise it will search with the Standard search engine (preselected in the app). It supports all browsers and following search engines:

The search bar in Open-Shell doesn't search the internet until you press Alt + S which tells it to open the Default browser and use that to perform the search. So if your Default browser is Firefox and your Default search engine in Firefox is ducky, then it will quack. 🦆
