Windows 11 feature deprecations and removals

  • Staff
When upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 or when installing an update to Windows 11, some features may be deprecated or removed. Please see below for information regarding some of the key features impacted:
  • Cortana will no longer be included in the first boot experience or pinned to the Taskbar.
  • Desktop wallpaper cannot be roamed to or from device when signed in with a Microsoft account.
  • Internet Explorer is disabled. Microsoft Edge is the recommended replacement and includes IE Mode which may be useful in certain scenarios.
  • Math Input Panel is removed. Math Recognizer will install on demand and includes the math input control and recognizer. Math inking in apps like OneNote are not impacted by this change.
  • News & Interests has evolved. New functionality has been added which can be found by clicking the Widgets icon on the Taskbar.
  • Quick Status from the Lock screen and associated settings are removed.
  • S Mode is only available now for Windows 11 Home edition.
  • Snipping Tool continues to be available but the old design and functionality in the Windows 10 version has been replaced with those of the app previously known as Snip & Sketch.
  • Start is significantly changed in Windows 11 including the following key deprecations and removals:
    • Named groups and folders of apps are no longer supported and the layout is not currently resizable.
    • Pinned apps and sites will not migrate when upgrading from Windows 10.
    • Live Tiles are no longer available. For glanceable, dynamic content, see the new Widgets feature.
  • Tablet Mode is removed and new functionality and capability is included for keyboard attach and detach postures.
  • Taskbarfunctionality is changed including:
    • People is no longer present on the Taskbar.
    • Some icons may no longer appear in the System Tray (systray) for upgraded devices including previous customizations.
    • Alignment to the bottom of the screen is the only location allowed.
    • Apps can no longer customize areas of the Taskbar.
  • Timeline is removed. Some similar functionality is available in Microsoft Edge.
  • Touch Keyboard will no longer dock and undock keyboard layouts on screen sizes 18 inches and larger.
  • Wallet is removed.
The following apps will not be removed on upgrade but will no longer be installed on new devices or when clean-installing Windows 11. They are available for download from the Store:

Oh, I can definitely see some people being upset about that.

I'm very tired because I have been working most of the day outside in the heat so my brain is in slow motion. I'm confused by the desktop wallpaper part.

The Alignment thing is straight out of Apple's playbook but I think this is due more to Marketing. Perhaps they aren't thinking different. Or it may be an currently-unresolved programming issue. I expect this will change. The Apps can no longer customize... thing may also be more of the same.

I'll cut them some slack. This W11 thing isn't just another pretty face.

No named groups or folders of apps on Start? Not resizable? Pinned apps don't migrate? Why even have a start menu if it provides little utility.

I'm using it and I'm more pissed off that it shows tiny icons even with apps running - as if the taskbar is in always combine mode.

I hate that.

Somehow it seems to me that whoever is programming the Start Menu is thinking phone/tablet rather than desktop, which always annoys me - I don't see why should a desktop (with, e.g., 32" screen) have the same UI as a phone (5" screen).

They are trying to unify them, it seems.

Again.

And we all know how that turned out last time.

One thing I've learned - investors rarely have a a good read on the pulse of the people....

I mean my #$%^$@#% monitors have sharp, 90° corners. WT #$%@#%$ F would I want rounded corner apps?

But I'm not an investor, so ... yeah.

But I'm not an investor, so ... yeah.
Never thought about the fact that all my monitors have 90° corners.. My laptop included. I just looked at my phone and it does have rounded corners. I hope MS isn't trying sneak us back to Windows 8.

Full screen seems to still be square corners though.

I remember old CRT screens that had round corners, and curved fronts, was never over fond of them back then, could be a revived market for obsolete Win 11 compatible CRT monitors though? .......... I'll get my coat.

I will miss ever knowing whats on my desktop now. For as long as I remember I have hidden desktop icons and used a Toolbar on my taskbar to access them. Now MS removed the toolbars... why even have desktop icons?

If I could have different icon settings for different desktops, I could show them all on one and hide on other... but that would be too easy.
