As a reminder, these release notes apply to those who are in the Canary 29600 Series Channel. As we begin the transition to the updated Windows Insider Program, all new build release notes will be labeled under the new channel names, even though Insiders in the Canary 29600 Series Channel may not yet find themselves having transitioned to Experimental (Future Platforms). See the Windows Insider Blog for more details.

Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out​

Audio​

  • Following up on our previous improvements, we’re making some more adjustments to Settings > System > Sounds based on your feedback. Namely, we’ve updated the “All sound devices” page so:
    • You now have the ability to change default devices from this page.
    • Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing.
    • We’ve adjusted the page design slightly so now you can filter whether you’re viewing input or output devices.
    • We’ve added toggles so you can choose if you want to hide or show disabled, disconnected, and unplugged devices on this page.
  • We’ve also updated the input and output audio properties page for devices in Settings to now include jack information for those that need it.

Reminder for Windows Insiders in the Canary 29600 Series Channel (soon transitioning to Experimental (Future Platforms))​

  • These builds can be unstable and may be released with limited documentation.
  • The builds released to these channels represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds might never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features might change over time, be removed, or replaced, and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they are ready.
  • Many features are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • For Windows Insiders who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders might not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.

I believe it's just showing that this is a development version of Windows and this one is 29613.1000 build and was called Canary channel previously.

Fabler2 is correct. That is Microsoft's standard practice for a build that is in the development stage for the next version of Windows.

When Microsoft start working towards a potential new release there are a few clues to look for. They keep the name of the next version a secret for as long as possible, rather than give it a real name they call it 'version Dev' or (for its updates) 'version Next'.

The final pre-cursor of Windows 11, build 21390.2025 on June 14 2021, was still pretending to be 10, but named as Version Dev in Winver.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

It looks a lot less confusing from inside the Beta channel build, or the 'channel formerly known as Dev' build.

Remember that I'm not an Insider? That I use the OfflineInsiderEnroll script? Well the updated Insider page for my Dev and Beta behaves as if I'm an Insider, despite being signed in with a Local account. The new Insider structure actually seems to make sense now....

On my machines with 29613.1000 it still shows Canary, the new Experimental (26H2) only showed up with 26300.8697 which was the old Dev channel. 🤣😝

MS posted in a blog post about changes to nomenclature of Windows Insider Channels nearly two months back. They're still in the process of changing everything around. They state this in the MS blog post Brink posted above.

This build 26300.8697 is now 26H2, but the insider channel still shows 25H2.
That is typical Microsoft confusing mess. 🤬🤷‍♂️

Does anyone know how common it is to apparently be under a 'hardware ID block' with insider builds?

As a final test I installed 29610.000 as a 100% clean install using Microsoft's own ISO. The issue of not receiving further builds started a couple of builds before that one and yes, there was an issue related to using Fast Start when those builds appeared in that it can freeze and fail to shutdown requiring a forced shutdown.

Turn off Fast Start and it all performs really well. The initial install receives around 50 various updates (drivers and all the usual miscellaneous stuff) on the first round and a further handful when checking a while later but none of the last few builds have gone on and offered the next Windows update when it is available.

Anyone ever been in that situation with Insider builds?
