I have just copied all my photos to an external drive using drag n drop, first time I have done it on Win 11. I used to do it on Windows 10. Exactly the same in every respect except this one is a bigger transfer and it was so much quicker using Win 11 about a third. Anyone else noticed this?

Interesting. I have not specifically noticed that, but I have noticed a general better "snapiness" especially on older, technically unsupported hardware. It's a bit ironic that Win 11 seems to run better on those older machines than Win 10 did. At least that has been my experience with the limited samples I have.

I've noticed a slight speed difference in opening apps from 10 to 11; but to go from "about a third" as you say in transferring files I don't know how 11 would be responsible for that. When I recently imaged both systems with Samsung T7s plugged into a USB 2.0 port on System 2 (all I had available at that moment) and then a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port on System 1 there was a great difference in speed.

I wish I could say the same, I tried 11 on my old machine and it was slower than slow, so back to 10. This machine is a fast one one and is spot on

This was just a comment I thought might be of interest, same machine, same external drive but the difference was so noticeable other things are either the same or maybe a touch faster but hardly noticable

Maybe you just had bad usb drivers on 10
I've seen no transfer differences between the two os's.

I did a serious hardware upgrade of my desktop a couple of months ago, couple with a clean install of Win10 -- and after that, did notice that file transfers are now very fast -- but they should be because the hardware on the motherboard is much faster.

I recently upgrade the same desktop to Win11 -- but the file transfers are no faster there, than in Win10.

Well, one thing that could cause an apparent faster file access is if you had been looking through the pictures, or scanning them with some software. That would cause the files to be cached in memory and that could cause the transfer to be faster while the files are all or mostly cached.

nothing changed on mine except the OS, just an anomaly I guess

I think drivers were fine, as they had been updated over the months, anyway it's no big deal there are a lot of other things that could affect it

I'm thinking this has to do with UASP support. (USB Attached SCSI Protocol)
It may not have been enabled on Windows 10, and may be enabled now.

My test machine dual boots Win11 and a copy of the Win10 that I upgraded to 11.

Click-and-drop the same bunch of photos from the same drive to the same external HDD took 24 seconds in 11 and 25 seconds in W10. So no, 11 doesn't seem faster for this task. It does generally feel 'snappier' though....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
