Do new physical retail USB copies of Windows 11 shipped in 2024 with silver label instead of red label on box come preformatted in FAT32 or exFAT? These retail packages are for new DIY custom PC builds with no operating system. The silver label is listed on the How to Tell - Packaged Software on the Microsoft website.

exFat, I think.

If you want Fat32, Microsofts Media Creation Tool formats the USB to Fat32 regardless of the USB size, as far as I remember. If you’re buying a package for the benefit of the key, just use the key with latest Media Creation Tool ISO created USB.

Doesn’t refer to the format, but good to know. I’d of just bought a key.
Post April 2022, this is the new label. Looks like Microsoft ditched Red & Silver labels. So if you’ve bought a retail box from someone with a red or silver label, the possibility could be that you are buying old stock? This could mean you are purchasing 22H2 as apposed to 23H2, hence possibly creating your own up-to-date USB

It's virtually certain that the retail USB will not contain the most recent build of W11, for that you should make your own with the Media Creation Tool, as suggested. The MCT currently will create a USB containing Windows 11 23H2 build 22631.2861.

The only important thing needed from the retail box is the product key. This is not tied to any specific build, even a key from the original W11 21H2 will activate the latest 23H2 build.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Even 23H2 is old news today. Who cares about labels, keys, etc. ?
24H2, is very available, in a Lite package. Clean, neat, and bloatware free.
And easy to download as an ISO that can be easily burned to a USB drive, using Rufus.

The OP does. These, presumably, are custom build PCs for paying customers. The keys are essential for activation, and customers would expect a perfectly normal install of the current OS as supplied by MS.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I suppose the argument will go on, but when I started building PC's and installing some kind of Operating System on them back in 1980, there was no Internet, and no ISO download site. To get any OS, and pay for it, you had to go into a retail store that sold those kinds of software.

DOS was everywhere! There were even more than one DOS. (Disk Operating Systems). I remember at least three different DOS's from different companies. Microsoft was not the only name in the game.

My first DOS, to run on my IBM Compatible DIY PC, was DOS 2.0 and it was given to me, on a floppy Disk, by a friend. At this date, I'm not even sure if it were MS DOS or IBM Dos. Not that it even made any difference, because they both ran good on the old 8088 cpu's.

If y'all had lived through those early days of DIY PC's, as I did, you might have a different view of acquiring an OS.

To pick an OS for this very computer, I wanted the Cleanest, and Fastest OS available on the planet. I don't give a tinker's dam who wrote it.

And did I get it from MS? NO!

And, if this were a more open minded forum, I'd gladly share with y'all the company that wrote this OS.
