Hi guys, new here :)

I know this is an old topic but this is exactly the same problem I am having, I'm currently using Win11 Build 23H2.
I have tried to use the regedit method (Windows 10 Not Playing System Sounds. All Other Sounds Are Okay. - Windows 10 Help Forums) and deleting the default string but I'm receiving the following error. No amount of permission editing (I have full admin rights) will change anything.

Please can anyone help, I have changed my sound drivers multiple times, all other sounds apart from Windows default sounds and 1 game's selective sounds will not play

Many thanks

Matt

So the built-in system sounds play when prompted such as an error occurs, startup, shutdown, etc. but no other sound plays? What media player are you using, e.g. Windows Media Player, Media Player, [Yes they are different], VLC, etc.? Do sounds from the Internet play? What are the formats of the sounds that don't play?

Windows Media Player, everything on the web plays, all music files play, if I browse Windows audio files and play in media player, it will play. Even when I adjust the volume Mixer, I will hear a chime that will tell me the selected volume

None of these wav files will play when test is played:

Wav files will play in whatever media player I will select (WMP or classic etc) so it cannot be the format itself

My Sounds in Control Panel looks just like yours and they Test just fine with Speakers set as the Output. I navigated to C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-shell-sounds-dm_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.1_none_a9a06b326661fac0 where the *.wav files are located, right-clicked a longer one such as Logon and chose Open with and Windows Media Player (Legacy) and it played, also worked in the default Media Player and VLC. You might do the same to verify the files are still good.

I've done that, all the files work perfectly in any media player, windows just won't play it on its own.
Incidentally, this first became a prob when one of the win updates came out, I thought it was the game I was playing (Prepar3d V5) which was not playing particular .wav files but had noticed it was not playing any of the windows sound, log on/off etc

Here's what I would try:
Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer

Yes a clean install is the last resort, but a repair install is much different that an clean install. You do not lose your personal settings or files. Most, if not all, applications stay intact.

Seems my windows was alot more corrupted than I first thought, I did do a scan which found corrupted files and tried to repair them but after a reboot then somehow disabled all my text editors :S. I'm now repairing windows to hope this works!!

Thanks for your help
