Windows 11 update is always rolling back Intel GPU drivers

I have the following issue, that Windows 11 (23h2, Home Edition) update is always rolling back Intel GPU drivers. Nothing I tried so far worked. It is Windows 11 Home so I dont have gpedit to deactivate drivers through Windows updates. Is there anyway to deactivate this madness which exists since years and MS is incompetent to give an option to block?

Installing gpedit for Home edition also didnt work. I get gpedit but the option seems to be ignored for non Pro Windows license.

This also does not work: Windows* Update Keeps Rolling Back Graphics Driver to a Previous...

Even after doing a clean installation like suggested in this post by Intel, next reboot, Windows update will again roll back.

Why is MS so incompetent?

This used to be a huge issue with AMD drivers as well. The issue was Microsoft Update pushed these drivers rather than showing them as optional and allowing the user to decide to install or not. So now they're doing the same thing with Nvidia drivers?

They've been doing it for all kinds of drivers, on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

After completing the tutorial... ALL the drivers from Microsoft become "optional" instead of forced.
This, of course, is a "good thing". :cool:



It's always best to get the drivers from the manufacturer, and manually update them if/when necessary.
If everything is functioning properly... don't even update the drivers.

For chipset drivers, on the other hand... it's best to get them from AMD or Intel, directly.
And... they should be updated as soon as they are released.

Like I SAID. NOT WORKING :-) The tutorial is obsolete and outdated and is not working since years for Home Edition of Windows 11.

I'm on Windows 11 Home... I used the registry patch, NOT the Group Policy Editor.
It works for me.

Here it is not working on every single Windows 11 Home PC of mine (reg """workaround""" applied obviously, why do you think I posted that information in my initial post!?), it worked 3-4 years ago, but then they changed something again which bypasses the registry options. It just works if you have Pro and use gpedit or the registry options, which kinda are identical. Theyre ignored if you have home license.

I used to have that problem with the AMD video drivers on my System One with Windows 11 Home. Have you tried rolling back the driver in Device Manager after Windows Update has 'updated' them? I did that, and since then MS haven't tried to 'update' them again.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Yes, that is the only thing which """works""", for certain amount of time, until you update the Intel GPU drivers again because of new version came out, and then next reboot Windows will again do the same rollback nonsene.

I'm ON Windows 11 HOME. The registry tweak works.
After doing the registry tweak... you have to reboot the computer to apply the changes.

You haven't filled out your computer specs, but if you're using some motherboard driver utility or 3rd party driver updater, that may be what's updating your drivers.

The registry tweak... works.
If the tutorial was obsolete, @Brink would have updated it. :-)



He writes the tutorials. That's what he does. That's ALL he does !!

MS used to update my Nvidia drivers, repeatedly.
I applied the registry tweak... and that stopped it.

I'm still on the Nvidia 516.94 drivers from August 2022.
And... I updated that myself from the 442.74 driver from 2020.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Once upon a time on my laptop with Windows 11 Home it worked like this:
1. Installed the driver from Windows Update.
2. Downloaded the new version from Intel's website.
3. Install the driver, but don't do a clean install (somewhere in the setup it is stated).

Maybe I was still changing something in the registry or things have changed now.

I just fired up my newest Intel machine using an Nivida 3080, ran MS Update and no updated video driver was offered or pushed. Z790/13700k/3080 12 GB. Current Nvidia driver is 556.12. Fully updated 11 Pro, not Home.

I believe the gpedit is just a front end, a GUI for the registry, so there's probably no difference.
You'd need someone on Win 11 Pro to check that.

Thanks, I'll try the gpedit and see if it works for a troublesome Intel driver.

Personally, I like the reg patches. Download them, double click, and then reboot to apply. :-)



But you could also use gpedit, and then check and see if it made the change in the registry like in post #11.
