a more accurate description would have been discourterous
Agreed. When one opens a topic in an open forum, to demand what one does or does not want to be included in the answers from the volunteers who are trying to help them is very discourteous. In fact, it's downright rude. Do topics sometimes get off course. They sure do. Many times it is a result of both differences in opinion as well as an unclear understanding of the issues the OP has. However, when responses do not apply, it's the OP's prerogative to skip over any that he has no interest in. I try not to get off topic but it's a work in progress.

I can only speak for myself, but I feel a responsibility when I answer posts here because it affects anyone who reads what I write... I feel a responsibility to give the best advice I can in any given situation based on my own experience ....and a genuine desire to help. Are my answers and advice always 100% correct and on point? No, but I do the best I can. I'm fairly sure this is the same sentiment of everyone else here who spends so much time and effort responding. This is not our job. We do not get paid for services rendered nor can we please everyone. Overall, I'd say the effectiveness of this forum and its members has proven itself by the reputation that it has established in the online community so we must be doing something right.

of course being recommended not to use it doesn't mean you can't, plenty of ancient programs work quite happily in Win11 any build.
hallelujah.
Perhaps instead of belligerant a more accurate description would have been discourterous.
discourteous if fair. i tend to be very rough around the edges. don't mean to be rude, just often perceived as being rude cause i am very direct with my thoughts and they come out raw without much thought if they will ruffle feathers. trying to be conscious about it. just little frustrating having to repeat myself. once something has been acknowledged once should be enough. i should not have to explain or defend my reasons for wanting to use the windows restore. just let me do my thing. lecture not needed.

while possible, i doubt very much it's anything i did. i've been using it for years. it's not like there is a bunch of options and features and different boxes to check. i've used it dozens if not 100+ times. first time after the update and it's behaving differently. more inclined to believe something has changed. just not sure what. i found it interesting they have been talking about removing it for years but instead of actually removing it they would make changes to it. wasn't sure if they made changes to the backup/restore feature specifically or it's was something with the OS that changed and it effected the system restore process. after i loaded my old image i made a new image with the new update installed. i'll try to load it later to see if it works as it always has.

I stumbled across this older thread b/c I am interested in imaging. It would be great if Windows Backup and Restore would be made functional and maintained. I just used it and it works great. Win 22H2 22621.1105. 1-24-23
I use Macrium free till Jan 2024 and during this time we will see where programs go in a year.
A lot of folks just can't keep paying for programs especially vital ones like an imaging program. I am not too techy and have not had success with the free ones out there. Also, who knows where they will go as time goes by.
I write in to Microsoft as a feedback now and then but I am only a small voice.

It's just updates for Free that end in Jan. 2024. It will continue to work long after that, the Free licence is perpetual. There may eventually be changes that Microsoft make to Windows that could stop it working, but that hasn't happened yet. I still have v7 Free running on a couple of my machines, the last update for that was in Nov. 2021.

So Bree, it is safe to use Macrium free after January 2024 but not to count on Windows Backup and Restore unless we all hear otherwise; do I have that right? Boy, Macrium has been a lifesaver.

Correct, but the chances of hearing anything from Microsoft on Backup & Restore are vanishingly small. Development ceased in 2017.

Well I can't fight city hall. It is too bad. Thank goodness for Macrium. At one time I read that they said they feel everyone should have access to imaging so we will continue to provide a free service. They changed their minds and I don't blame them as they are a business and I actually owe them. I am being redundant but that's business. What is the easiest program for free in your opinion. I am not techy and have not had much luck.
I can't make a VM so it is hard to keep trying. I had a bit of luck with Paragon but was lucky with choices like enee meeny..

Well, nobody can state with 100% certainty that future updates to Windows will not create a situation that breaks the free version after its EOL.

There were some updates on the Insider Programme a couple of years or so back that did create a problem and updates to Reflect were issued.

VSS is often problematic - what if MS decides to change how it works for (say) Windows 12? I would image supported imaging tools would need to be updated.

I hate to say this but I would have to recommend AOMEI free versions if user wants a free basic tool once Reflect goes EOL based on the assumption they continue to service a free version.

Image backups are too important to rely on tools that are no longer serviced.

However, for free Reflect enthusiasts, the paid licence is not that expensive, especially if you get it on Black Friday (assuming they keep to the traditional 50% off). So why not wait till then, and make a decision what to do?

I rather contend a licence on Black Friday costs less than a few hours down the pub for most users.

You could give Hasleo Backup Suite a try. It is free, and is straight forward. Just commit to one, read the user manual, and start using whichever you choose. The important thing is to start backing up you data! :)

What is the easiest program for free in your opinion
Macrium- Just because Macrium will no longer issue updates for the current version of Macrium Free doesn't mean that the software won't continue to work. It won't magically disappear from your computer.
I actually owe them.
Many of us here owe them. Because I appreciated how well it worked to save my bacon on more than one occasion, I supported their efforts by buying it. They always offer discounts around Black Friday.
I can't make a VM
You don't need a VM to image. If you don't want to make your image from within the OS, boot from your recovery media to make your backup. Many prefer to do it this way.

There have been many, MANY discussions on this forum where everyone has given their opinions on the backup software they use. Search the forum for suggestions. Many do an efficient job but I don't think you will find one faster than Macrium. The list is extensive but the ones I can think of offhand that offer a free version are:
Easeus ToDo
Hasleo
Aoemi Backupper
Paragon
Clonezilla (not easy IMO)

Since Macrium leads the imaging world, I won't be the least surprised if all the others follow suit and discontinue offering their products for free as well.

I am still waiting to see if Macrium has a sale and will likely get it anyway.
Macrium regularly has 20% discounts at holidays, the next likely one being Easter. The Black Friday discount is usually 50%. If you need more than one Reflect license, then a 4-pack is only a fraction more than 2 individual licences.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
