Can I backup a drive like C:\ as an image for restoring or its it only file backup. I need a failsafe backup system in case windows crashes. I used Macrum free but this is no longer supported. I would like an image with a bootable USB system. Is this what MS offers or do I need specialised software?

It's not supported any more but it still works.

Indeed, I use it for making a secondary image along with Aomei Pro. It never hurts to have more backup images.

Let’s be clear, “Windows Backup” (File History?) and Windows “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” are two different things.

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) — via Control Panel — has been deprecated and replaced by File History in later versions of Windows.
But like others, I still use Backup and Restore (Windows 7) very occasionally and does still work (I think). It will still work to restore an image at boot, I know that for certain, but I have to be honest, I haven’t tried actually creating an image for a while.
Backup and Restore (Windows 7) Creates an image. File History doesn’t.

Hasleo looks good and there is even a bitlocker which is only available in windows for people who pay top notch for the profesional business edition of windows.

Lower SKUs have device encryption, which uses the same 128-bit XTS-AES algorithm that BitLocker uses.

I have used TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite for years. It is paid for software but very well worth the cost and the producers don't gouge at users by having many multiple new versions to raise extra licence funds.

You can create bootable USB Flash Drives and/or CDs to manage the backups if you so wish, this is what I always do. When I make the bootable USB Drive I always create it as an "Image for Linux" drive. My reason for doing that is that I like the Linux interface environment very much to work within when doing a backup or restore operation; doing this works flawlessly even for a PC system that is Microsoft Windows based. However, it isn't essential to do it this way, you can create a bootable "Image for Windows" flash drive and use that if you prefer.

You can download and run the software on a trial basis to see if you would like to use it on an ongoing basis.

...and when using the "Image for LINUX" version of the Recovery Media, the imaging speed rate is much faster (LINUX is very efficient).
