Antivirus programs are constantly scanning your system for unusual activity to prevent malware from impacting your system. That's normal, and Windows Defender is no exception to this.


But there's more to it than meets the eye. A screenshot shared by Techpowerup shows that Defender used about 4% of the CPU while CineBench was running, and some benchmark comparisons resulted in a 6% loss because the antivirus was using excessive resources. It uses these for the Real-time Protection notifications.

I'm not sure I understand the point here, if you are running a synthetic benchmark to measure a CPU's performance why would you not just disable as much as possible before the run, including Defender, the same way that when people run a GPU benchmark they turn down/ off as much as possible to get higher scores, for example turning off antialiasing, turning down textures and post processing?
On the other hand If you are benchmarking a systems real world performance under Windows 10/ 11 then part of that would be Defenders impact and is to be expected, along with result variances depending on workload type.
Or is this just a way to get yet another piece of random software, that probably isn't even necessary in reality (Counter Control), on to your system.

Granted.
However, if everyone assumed WD was having the same impact on AMD CPUs as on Intel CPUs... it really wouldn't matter if WD was disabled. Any impact would ofc matter to those going for the top spot and the leader boards, but otherwise...

Well I have just done a few tests on my system (the one in My Computers spec), performing the BMW blender render using only the CPU and Defender process used 0.1% through out, ran the render 3 times. Rendered on the GPU (obviously completed faster) 0.1% occasionally raising to 0.2% for a micro second.
Downloading a 750Mb driver package (took 2.5 minutes) 0.01% - 0.3% (upper % so short, blink and you miss it), extracting the driver package to 1.4Gb 0.1% - 0.4% (again, upper % so short and only occurred twice).
Copying the 1.4Gb driver package (various file types and sizes) from one physical disk to another, 0.1% - 0.2%, occasional peak at 0.3%.
Overall the process seems to use 0.0% during most Windows operations (switching sites in Edge, browsing local drives, editing photos etc.) occasionally peaking at 0.1% - 0.2%.
Your mileage may vary depending on system and software used, but the point is that Defender doesn't seem to use much processing time at all during 'normal' use, for me at least, and certainly not enough to notice.
Of course there will be a difference in impact on different CPU architectures, but again probably varies depending on workload.
I can see that for benchmarking having an anti malware/ virus checker running would impact results, but most serious benchmarking requires disabling such software to prevent interference if chasing high scores, otherwise this just seems like a pointless dig at defender in a very specific use case.
As for the claim that "Counter Control from uWebb software fixes the issue", that app is running on both screenshots, good and bad.

My concern is simply the ghacks.net article's title followed by "counter control fixes the issue" (what issue?), in reality counter control is a monitoring tool and is shown running in both screenshots, good and bad, regardless of msmpeng.exe usage.
Hence my view that this is just a clickbait article intended to bash Defender and promote installing a piece of software that serves no real purpose (unless you just want to log some info), except to soak up more CPU time.
Just my view of course. :)

Why? That is my point, Cinebench is a synthetic benchmark, it is designed to hit the CPU with an excessive workload to measure core performance during that workload, it does not reflect real world usage for the majority of PC users.
I am not denying that Defender does indeed use system resources, of course it does (more on Intel than AMD, pretty sure that is situational, but whatever), but what has that to do with running a benchmark.
If you are chasing numbers then disable Defender, the same as you would with any other anti virus, RGB app, wallpaper slideshow etc, before running.
Otherwise the result is expected and you are benchmarking the performance of that system as to be experienced by the average user, warts and all.
Regardless, the article linked in the OP still claims that counter control 'fixes' the issue, yet it appears it is simply a monitoring and logging tool, similar to hundreds of others available for free.
It seems the only way it 'fixes' the issue is by showing that you should disable Defender before running a synthetic benchmark for higher scores.
I am not arguing with you, I honestly do not see the point of the article the way it is presented, or the need for a piece of software being promoted as a fix, which isn't, as shown by their own screenshots.

I know it's a synthetic benchmark.
But IF it can show a difference, then I would think most CPU intensive workloads, would.

I can concur running a real version of W11 (any) - the fan on my HP envy laptop starts going bonkers and the laptop gets quite warm (Intel i5). Running W10 is OK, and running either as VM's are also OK. I don't need to benchmark in order to hear the fan "revving up" and the laptop getting warmer than usual. No problem though on a NAS server quality machine (also with INTEL mobo and processor(s).

Disabling WD quiesces the computer -- so there's something for sure in the current iterations of WD. I'm sure if enough people are experencing this fault Ms and Intel will find a fix. It's certainly something to do with the CPU code -- since running a Virtual CPU doesn't have the problem - at least on my machine,
