Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Turn Windows Defender Periodic Scanning... OFF.
With Kaspersky, you don't really need WD Periodic Scanning.
How do I find this setting ?

My settings say Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off

If you're on 21H2... it may look a bit different, but should be similar.
I'm running Bitdefender, which took over from WD, so that should be similar too.

That should take care of that popup.

As for the Notification app, itself... I still haven't figured out how to disable that, without breaking something else.

  • It addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Defender when it is not the primary antivirus. Microsoft Defender fails to turn off passive mode. This issue occurs when you turn off Smart App Control (SAC).

This doesn't happen on my Windows 11 22H2 Dell XPS 13 EVO laptop . Is there an update for 21H2 ?

They are all off but I did note the MS Defender AV Options Peridioc Scanning was set to on , even though I previously set the slider to OFF , it shouldn't be switching to ON without my intervention. Something is causing this to switch to ON.

Type: regedit.exe ...in the Taskbar search box, to open the registry editor.
Navigate to this key in the registry...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender Security Center\Notifications

On the right side (if it's not already there), right click a blank space and choose: New > DWORD (32 bit), and name it... DisableNotifications. Then set it's value to "1".
Then reboot the computer to apply the changes.
That should take care of any and all Security notifications.

Image1.png

If you ever want to re-enable Security notifications... just set it's value back to "0" (zero)

If you're not comfortable with editing the Registry, you can just use this patch...
Save it to your desktop then double click it to open the ZIP, then drag and drop the patch to your desktop.
Then double click the patch to merge it with the Registry.

Then reboot the computer to apply the changes.

This is what is in the registry patch...
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender Security Center\Notifications]
"DisableNotifications"=dword:00000001

I just did the same thing to my comp, about three days ago... haven't seen any Security notifications since then.
You can test it yourself.

Just temporarily disable Kaspersky. When Windows Defender sees that it's disabled, it would normally pop up a warning.
Now it won't do that. :-)

The entire Notifications section is a joke.
There's a big Notifications toggle right at the top which Windows completely ignores.

Image1.jpg

The top (#1) should turn off ALL Notifications... it doesn't .
The middle (#2) should turn off ALL Security and maintenance notifications... it doesn't.

Then inside Security and Maintenance the top toggle should turn off ALL below it... it doesn't.
AND... if you want to UNcheck those two boxes, you have to go back and turn ON the three toggles before you get to the check boxes. LOL
Image2.png

THEN along comes a monthly update and changes all the toggles and switches again, to no pattern understood by man.

Who thinks this stuff up, and why aren't they committed. ^^
Settings reminds me of those toys for little kids, with all the switches and dials that don't DO anything. :D

Now with the registry... it's one item, and poof... no more Security notifications.

I have Defender off, but over the last couple days I've been getting Defender scan result messages. Did a recent update change something?

@dbartenstein

I never see that screen in your shot. I think you want Defender running alongside MBAM (it's a widespread myth that they won't cooperate, but they will -- perfectly), and in order to get that situation, you have to open Malwarebytes, click Settings (the gear at the top), in the Settings window, click Security in the top row of tabs, and in the Security window, scroll down to Windows Security Center, and slide OFF the slider for Always register ...

That'll do 'er.

If you do that, and (for instance) you download a possibly malicious program and try to open it, Defender will grab it, and if you register that program with Defender as an acceptable threat and then try again to open it, Malwarebytes will grab it. Many AV programs are incompatible with Defender, but MBAM, properly set, isn't one of them.

There are several threads about running a third-party AV and Defender together on this Forum. I think it has been demonstrated conclusively that MBAM and WD run happily together.

EDIT: In all of the above, I'm referring to Malwarebytes Premium, not MBAM Free. The Free version doesn't run in real time, just on demand, and when used to scan (on demand), it doesn't interfere with Defender at all. Premium runs all the time in real time, with malware, ransomware, exploit, and Web protection live at all times, and runs alongside Defender, if MBAM Premium is properly set.
