Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Windows 11
Hello there,

I was recently playing a game and my system crashed (not BSOD, it was just stuck). I performed a restart, everything seemed normal and then proceeded to playing the game again. The moment I joined the game my system crashed again and this time when I restarted, I had artifacts on my screen. I opened up the Device Manager and found this error message "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" on the Display Driver.

I had an old GPU (GTX 760) and so I thought maybe my GPU is dying. I did the usual complete uninstall of drivers using DDU and then reinstalled them. Didn't help. Thus, I went on and ordered a new GPU, even though the prices are insane. The GPU just arrived, I removed the drivers using DDU again, inserted the new GPU (Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC) and then installed the latest drivers.

I noticed slight red lines on my screen and my cursor would leave a slight trail of red when moving but I thought that would be because of no drivers, silly me. Now that I have installed the drivers and the red lines (sort of) are still there, I opened up the Device Manager again and the same error message can be seen (Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)).

I'm out of options right now and would really wish to solve this issue. I'm wondering if this is because of Windows 11, but not sure. I have attached some photos for the sake of context. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Setup:
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: ASUS TUF X570-GAMING Plus WiFi
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC

Windows Build/Version
OS Build 22000.258

Hello @m4kman , welcome to ElevenForum.

If you haven't done so already, install the latest motherboard chipset driver, and if the problem still exists, report back...

Well... there's three possibilities.
1. drivers
2. vid card
3. power supply

...and the really off the wall chance, the RAM needs re-seated.

What was going on when the problem started?
I don't mean... "I was playing a game". Did anything else change.
Do you only have the problem on that one game? How about other games, or just plain Windows?

Are you on the latest BIOS?
Vid card cables? When did Windows 11 get installed?
Was it a clean install, an update, an In-Place upgrade?
There's a new Win 11 update to take you to .282

Hi, sorry for the initial reply, didn't read the bottom message.

No, nothing was changed. The cables are the same, everything was the same. I installed Windows 11 when it was released on the 5th of October. I started facing this problem like a week ago but I was waiting for a GPU, thinking that would fix the problem. Unfortunately, it hasn't.

I'm gonna install the new update now and see if that bears any fruit.

I know your research points to the vid card, etc.
But Windows 11 has been having issues with the L3 cache of Ryzen CPUs.
The Windows Update concerns this as does the chipset driver, and the latest BIOSes.

Do you have the same problem on "other" games?

Hi,

I haven't been able to play any game because the system crashes when I launch the game. I actually haven't tried it with other games but I reckon that's what going to happen. I actually have dual monitors and when both are plugged in, it can't even turn on the second display so I think playing a game is a long shot.

Additionally, I don't know if this would be of any help, but I don't have a GPU option in the Performance tab of Task Manager which means the driver is being disabled by Windows..

Ok... how did you get to Windows 11?

Was it Windows update?
Was it clean install?
Was it an In-Place upgrade?

Also... until we get this fixed, just unhook the 2nd monitor.

The reason I asked, is that an In-Place upgrade will fix just about all Windows problems.
In fact, for a lot of issues we recommend it.

In-Place upgrade

Go here, and use the 3rd option. Download the ISO and save it to your desktop.

Disable any non-Microsoft antivirus or encryption software.
Right click the ISO and choose: Mount
Open File Explorer and you should see a new "optical drive".
Double click that to open it, find setup.exe and double click that to run it.
Choose: Keep files and programs.

It takes about 35 mins to run.
The only thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.

This will fix 99,999% of Windows issues.

Things an In-Place upgrade won't fix...
Drivers, 3rd party programs.

As for DDU, this is how I run it. I leave everything at defaults except what is mentioned...

DDU Instructions - Nvidia
1. Get this program, here: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) | Wagnardsoft ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
2. Get the Standard/Game Ready vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: Advanced Driver Search | NVIDIA ...save this to your desktop. Make sure you're not selecting the 3070 notebook driver.
Unhook the internet completely.
3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
4. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the Nvidia driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.
Rehook the internet.

Thank you for the suggestion. Reinstalling Windows has been on my mind but I was wondering if I could get it fixed without having to do that.

On that note, I just discovered that when powering on my PC, the VGA light (solid white light) stays for a bit longer than usual before the Boot light turns on. I'm not sure what this means but I figured I would mention it because this hasn't happened before. The screen stays black for a while longer than normal as well.

If nothing works out in the end, I'll be certainly performing an in-place upgrade or a clean install. I've already started downloading the ISO.

The In-Place upgrade doesn't mess with your installed programs or files, and only takes about 35 mins.
My Windows 10 was running perfect, so on Oct. 5th, I did an In-Place upgrade to get to Windows 11. :)

And when you run DDU, you need to disable the internet. If you don't Microsoft will be trying to download and install it's nvidia driver, while you're trying to install the driver you downloaded.

Hi,

Yes, I'm aware that an In-Place upgrade doesn't with my personal files and programs. I'm gonna look into it, but before that, I wish to perform some additional troubleshooting steps.

My BIOS is not upto date which is what I fear might be factoring in causing the issue. Furthermore, I wasn't aware I need to disable my internet while using DDU. That's something I'm going to try again.

Will keep you posted.

Just a thought, it might be the PCIe slot that has issues, is there a second slot on the MB you could try?

Yes, I inserted the new GPU into a different PCIe slot and the problem is still there.

Quick question: Is there a way I could format my system drive while performing an In-place upgrade? I have two partitions, I wish to format my system drive and not the other one since it has all of my data. Is that possible in an in-place upgrade?

The In-Place upgrade will only do it's thing on the Windows system partitions.

The EFI, the recovery, the C:\ drive.

The In-Place upgrade will only do it's thing on the Windows system partition.
So if I choose the Nothing option on the Choose what to keep screen, it'll only format the system partition i.e. C:?
