Windows Mail, Calendar and People app in Windows 11 will be replaced by Outlook in 2024

 Outlook Blog:

UPDATE 9/05: Hear the latest update about the new Outlook for Windows from the product leads.

The new Outlook for Windows brings the latest features with a modern, simplified design to your Windows PC. You can tailor it to your style and do more with the new Outlook for Windows. Learn more about the new Outlook for Windows here.

Beginning in 2024, Windows 11 devices will be shipped with the new Outlook for Windows as the default mailbox application free for all to use. Starting in June 2023, we are beginning the process of migrating existing Windows Mail, Calendar, and People users to the new Outlook for Windows.

What to expect

If you have an account that is supported by the new Outlook for Windows, you will see a toggle in Windows Mail and Calendar to Try the new Outlook in the upper right corner of your screen. Clicking on the toggle will start the download of the new Outlook for Windows on your device. This may take several minutes to complete. After the installation completes, Windows Mail or Calendar will close and the new Outlook for Windows will open, where you can sign in and choose to import your accounts and settings.

If you would like to go back to Windows Mail and Calendar, you can do so by clicking on the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows. You’ll be asked to provide feedback on why you are going back – we encourage you to let us know what we can improve about the new Outlook for Windows so that our product team has the chance to address feedback before support for Windows Mail and Calendar ends in 2024.

To streamline your experience, over the coming months we will begin to automatically download and install the new Outlook for Windows onto your device when you launch Windows Mail and Calendar. You’ll be notified about this the launch before the download/install happens. We will also begin in 2023 to launch users directly into the new Outlook for Windows, with the option to toggle back to Windows Mail and Calendar. Again, you will be notified about this the launch before it happens.

If you are not interested in trying the new Outlook for Windows, you can stop using Windows Mail and Calendar and instead manage your email and calendar through your service’s webmail application, or a different email client. Support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People is ending in 2024 so if you don’t want to use the new Outlook for Windows after trying it, you will need to move to a different application by the end of 2024. More information on specific end of support dates will be made available in accordance with the Modern Policy for product lifecycles.

What if one of my accounts is not yet supported?

The new Outlook for Windows supports Microsoft 365 consumer accounts (e.g. Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, etc.), Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, and Gmail. In the coming months we will release support for Yahoo!, iCloud and additional email providers through IMAP and POP.

If you have an account connected to Windows Mail and Calendar that is not yet supported by the new Outlook for Windows, you will not be prompted to try the new experience. Once the new Outlook for Windows supports your account, you will begin to see the same prompts and messaging described above.

Not seeing the toggle yet as I have unsupported accounts but hopefully these will be added soon.
for those who’re using it is there a combined inbox?
I see it in both Win 10/11. I have many POP/IMAP accounts unrelated to outlook .com. Seems fine.

Hmmm. How do I know if the email I'm using in Mail/aka "Outlook-Mail" is POP or IMAP?

And how can I change it? (Can I change it?)

My understanding is that IMAP accounts, unlike POP accounts, when they are accessed automatically remove the original from the server.

POP email accounts remain on the server so that other devices you use can access the emails. If you delete it off one device, it's still available to receive on another device.
IMAP act as if there is one controller (you) all devices will receive the email, but if you delete it off one device, it deletes it from all devices. If you read it on one device, it is marked as read on another device and so on. All devices have access and receive the same email.
This is pretty handy if you own multiple devices and don’t want to have to delete or handle the same email multiple times.

Most mail servers will handle POP and IMAP, the distinction is how you set it up via instructions from your ISP. You get to pick.

P.S.
The IMAP emails will always be on the server as long as you don’t delete them off a device. If you delete an IMAP email, it will go into the deleted items folder (on all devices) and unless your device (or server) marks the deleted items folder to empty after a period of time, they will remain in there until you remove them.

P.S.S
POP is messy, eventually, unless you access the server and delete mail, the size of the mail server can get quite large, in my wifes case, 2tb at one stage. I showed her that IMAP is much more efficient. Now I have a .PST file on her PC with a folder structure so she can drag the mail she wants to keep into a folder in her .PST file, which removes them from the server and keeps them on her PC. I can’t afford the server space otherwise.

Not quite.
- When you use IMAP, your email client shows you what is on the server. It does not download anything but the email header. [Pop downloads the whole thing.]
- When you use IMAP, you can force a download for individual emails.

When you use Pop, you can choose whether to leave a copy of the email on the server or remove it if your email client provides that option for you.
I routinely set my Pop email retrieval to remove emails from the server when they are downloaded.
I have configured my MSOffice Outlooks for Pop email retrieval and do not know what settings are available for IMAP configurations.
I understand that Pop is not at all secure.

All the best,
Denis

I understand that Pop is not at all secure.
You can setup the same security settings for POP as you can for IMAP (Secure SSL/TLS Settings) . It’s all in which input that the ISP gives you that you choose to use. Non-SSL is a problem.

Also, jro, for outlook mail (on windows mail app), to change from POP to IMAP, you will need remove and re-add the email account. Having said that, I do not know that outlook.com/hotmail etc email addresses offer POP. But you can certainly add other personal emails not associated with Microsoft as POP or IMAP to Outlook mail (windows mail)

You can change an account from IMAP to POP in Microsoft Outlook (the suite/Office 365) via mail settings.
It can all sound unnecessarily confusing, but taken time, it isn’t really.
I’ve been meaning to write a tutorial on IMAP/POP and Microsoft for some time in case something happens, so my wife is OK with it. I should pull my finger out.

With POP the email are downloaded to the PC. Disadvantage of IMAP is that while you can download email they all have to be downloaded individually, or 'saved' as Microsoft calls it. This new free Outlook app won't open them like the old Mail App did so you need an Eml reader.

I just don't get this new Outlook app guys.

You close the window on the new Outlook app and it literally closes the app, and you don't receive notifications. Why?

The current Mail app continues to provide notifications if you close the window.

You boot your PC in the morning, the Outlook App is not automatically running. You have to literally manually launch it. Why?

The current Mail app runs from boot.

I'm not impressed with this new app at all.

When they say things like, this is the feedback we have received from a majority of our customers, we are expected to take that for granted. For all I know, this is something they say so as to justify implementing their own personal agenda. Don’t get me wrong, I love outlook, but I DO NOT have any appreciation for Ai and Microsofts agenda of implementing it across it’s entire platform and all its apps.
I don’t understand why people can’t see a future where Ai will be a controlling factor in 95% of our lives and at some point (as an extreme) we will be ruled by President Ai, President Google or President Microsoft etc in a new world order.
OK I know, for the minute that is an extreme opinion. But seriously…
Every piece of information we input into some kind of Ai, it is used to allegedly better the Ai itself. But in reality, it’s digitally cloning us. I just don’t want to consent to that.

    …still on a horse.
I like Outlook's new UI, but I hate Microsoft's new AI (CoPilot). I decided to switch to (new) Outlook after the official release (as a Windows 11 native mail app). I hope MS doesn't force users to use the AI there, otherwise, I won't use it.

This is the fourth time I have installed, then had to uninstall it, since it's been out.
It lets me add my Gmail account, but doesn't show anything when I ´get mail, or anything at all in the all the folders.

When they kill the Communications apps(Mail & Calendar) and the new Outlook still sucks, I might have to go to Thunderbird, which I haven't used since Windows 7.

This Outlook Beta is perfectly representative of how much Nadella's Microsoft has gone to hell since the inception of Windows 11(That and the taskbar).

That's the reason I uninstalled it. The app doesn't run automatically, so I don't get notifications of any incoming mail unless the Outlook app is manually running and minimised. Not to mention, it closes the app if you hit the close button, so you have to run it again, something the existing Mail app doesn't do.

I contacted Microsoft support and they informed me because the new Outlook PRE app is still beta it doesn't include the auto run feature of Mail yet.

The trouble is, Microsoft are literally telling people to try the app via that annoying slider, so they should have implemented the very run functions that the Mail app has already. I.e. It's running after I boot, and it's still running after I close the window.

Sorry I'm moaning here, it's just annoying.
