@Brink - How do I find out what exact version I have installed as it's not the one in installed apps which is 5.10.102.1.

@Almighty1

Note if you use this rather than a Linux VM -- and there are perfectly valid reasons for using this -- that the current Linux kernel on most distros is 6.9.xx or 6.1.xx and there has been significant improvements to hardware, performance etc etc.

So by using an older kernel in WSL (5.x.x) you could be missing out on a load of things -- OK I know that this is a specially written kernel for Ms but it's still basically a "Standard" Linux kernel with some proprietary stuff from Windows added in.

OK perfectly good if people don't want to use VM's -- just pointing out a possible problem which might not be a real issue for some.

This IMO is a better way to run Linux in a pure Windows environment -- run from a Docker container

This was possible as far back as W10

My Linux isn't for Linux specifically since if I wanted Linux, after I rennovate the house, it will probably be on a real machine anyways if I needed it for real tasks and not be running on a VM as it's not the same and has limitations. There isn't any thing I am missing as the WSL for me is actually used to build Windows Subsystem for Android with Google Play Store, and Magisk. That's why I am running Ubuntu or otherwise I would be running Debian.

WSL did go up to the 6.x.x kernel (6.6.36.3 to be specific in WSL 2.3.11) and then they reverted in WSL 2.3.17 5.1 to 5.153.1-2 kernel while issues are being debugged which was recent as WSL 1.1.7 which came out in April 3, 2023 updated the Linux kernel to 6.1.21.1-1 and then only a day later on April 4, 2023 where in WSL 1.2.0, they reverted back to the Linux 5.15.90.1 kernel version while they debug a few issues. So obviously they are using a outdated kernel which brings in stability while they work out the other issues before they push out the latest kernel again as all of these are in the logs if people actually read them.

The Linux kernel is the only thing that is really Linux as everything else is packaged by whatever distribution that one chooses to use. The other thing is if no one used WSL, it will no longer be a option as there would be no point for it.
