Windows Takes Long Time to Display Canon SD450 Camera in File Explorer

Windows 11 Home - Version 25H2 26200.8655
When I connect my Canon SD450 compact camera to my computer, Windows takes over 30 seconds to display the camera in File Explorer. The camera shows as an MTP device and not a drive. Photos can be accessed using the DCIM folder.

It appears that the driver is reinstalled every time I connect the camera to the computer and set it to the transfer mode. The driver is dated 6-21-06. Autoplay does not work with the camera but it does work with flash drives.

Here are the events that show for the driver installation. These four events repeat every time the camera is connected.

Would the driver reinstallation explain the 30 second delay? Is there any way to fix this problem?

When the same camera is connected to my Windows 10 computer, Autoplay works and File Explorer comes up almost immediately.

Thanks for any help.

It doesn't look like there are any Windows 11 drivers for the Canon SD450 which may be the problem.
They do show Win 10 (x64) drivers, though.

The Canon Knowledge Base, recommends uninstalling the old driver before trying to update or install new drivers.

There is another possibility... Microsoft may be installing their driver over top of the Canon driver which could corrupt the installed Canon driver. You might want to disable drivers included in Windows updates...

These MS drivers will still be available, but will now be Optional drivers.

Then download the Canon SD450 Win 10 (x64) driver, uninstall the current Canon driver... then install the driver you just downloaded.

Thanks very much Ghot for the help.

That is interesting that Canon has software for Windows 10 but not Windows 11.

I believe the software available for Windows 10 is the Camera Window program. That appears to be a utility for transferring photos from the camera rather than a driver.

It may be that Windows is installing a generic MTP driver after failing to find a specific driver for the camera. The SD450 goes back to 2005.

The current operation is workable and photos can be copied manually from the DCIM folder.

Another option is Microsoft Photos which has an import feature. The program does find the camera after the 30 second delay.

Google AI has this...

Canon does not have official Windows 11 drivers or software for the retired PowerShot SD450. Instead, the camera uses the built-in Windows PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) standard. You can seamlessly connect it without any Canon software by turning the camera to "Playback" mode before plugging it into your Windows 11 PC via USB. [1, 2, 3]
If your PC automatically struggles to communicate with the camera over USB, or if you prefer a faster, more reliable method, use one of the following approaches:

Method 1: Direct File Transfer (Recommended)
  1. Turn off your PowerShot SD450 and remove the SD card.
  2. Insert the SD card into a standard SD card reader connected to your Windows 11 PC.
  3. Open File Explorer and click on the SD card drive.
  4. Navigate to the folder path DCIM -> 100CANON (or similar) to copy and paste your photos directly. [1, 2]

Method 2: Import via Windows 11 Photos App
  1. Turn on the camera in Playback mode and connect it to your PC's USB port.
  2. Open the Photos app on Windows 11.
  3. Click the Import icon (usually located in the top-right corner) and choose From a USB device.
  4. Select the detected camera and follow the on-screen prompts to transfer the images. [1]

The Sureshot sd450 camera is over 20 years old. Thank your lucky stars that it is still accessible at all albeit with a delay. Some other older devices of various kinds no longer are.
