Xbox controller won't charge via usb laptop port.

Hi, as per the title, when I connect the Xbox One controller to my laptop it doesn't charge, I'll start by saying that I have an original Microsoft rechargeable battery and USB cable, I remember having deactivated charging via USB ports in the options but I can no longer find the option to reactivate it. can you help me please ? thanks a lot !

Charging over USB while the laptop is idle or asleep, is normally a BIOS setting.

Holy cow I just tried with my smartphone with the same cable and they charge.

I bought an Xbox Elite Series 2 gamepad a couple of days ago and couldn't get it to work until I installed the Xbox Accessories app from the MS Store and configured it in there. Windows 11 would not fully recognize the gamepad until that was done.

I assume you've tried uninstalling the Xbox gamepad in windows, rebooting and completing the setup again?

IMHO my problem is different, there's some kind of problem on battery circuitry or calibration, on Windows 11 it always show 13% battery.

What do you mean by "uninstalling the Xbox game pad in Windows "? You mean the app Xbox accessories?

I mean uninstall the drivers in the Device Manager. On my system it is under Human Interface Devices >> Bluetooth LE XINPUT compatible input device & XINPUT-compatible device. Reboot and configure in Xbox Accessories.

It is strange the battery won't fully charge.

So after a lot of enable/disable on device manager and other stuff I can say that my main problem are:
-battery percentage displayed in the bluetooth tab is always incorrect, the moment I connect the controller it say the right percentage but after a few seconds it show a different one (always 13% or 14%).
-the controller disconnects often, 2 meters away from the laptop.

Does it make any different if using USB 3 ports [blue centers] versus USB 2 ports [black centers]? I have a 4-port USB 3 self-powered Hub that charges quite well. [USB 3 provides more power than USB 2].

Does your notebook come with a manual where you can find out if one of the USB-C ports is
dedicated to charging?
Does the notebook come with software where you can turn Off or On charging of devices?
With MSI notebooks, we have MSI Center where you can activate all kinds of settings but, with
one that is specific to charging either with the notebook On or Off like this:

Everything else looks fine.
Anyway now I found the option and is disabled, xbox controller is the only device that won't charge in any of the trhee usb ports (two 3.0, one 2.0).

Do you know the power needs for the charging of the xBox Controller ?
I don't have one so, it would be up to you to find out what is the power
requirement is for the controller.
Also, download the manual for your notebook to see exactly if there is
specific USB port to use for charging peripherals.

Also, it is a good idea to cycle the battery every 3 to 4 months. Just use it
on battery until it gets to about 5% and then plug in charger to fully charge again.
Batteries last longer when cycled.
And, why does it say, in your screen shot , to stop charging when it reaches 30% ??

Is not charging from a month or less... before it worked perfectly, I don't know what changed.

Have you tried the BIOS settings?
You could also ask in the Aspire forums to see if there is a quick fix for your situation

One more thing to know about charging when the notebook is off or in sleep mode.
All connected peripherals will still be ON even though the notebook is Off so, if you
have other peripherals other than a mouse (which should have it's own off switch) will
remain active. Just be aware of this fact.

I don't know anything about Xbox controllers.
But don't rechargeable batteries have a life span?

You are absolutely right.@Ghot
This is why we have to cycle them once in a while so they last longer
but, even with attention, they still need changing after a certain amount
of cycling.
Maybe it's time for such a change since your USB port is working properly
it might be time for a change of battery. Something like this:


How long have you had this controller and have you ever had to change the battery?
it seems from what I have seen, you can have either (if it's the same one I saw) AA batteries
or a rechargeable one like in the Amazon link.

I think you're on the money @Ghot

There is a thread over at the MS forums about this issue and it seems that replacement rechargeable batteries can be purchased for Xbox controllers when they wear out.
