After installing the latest stable Win 11 update, I've lost video playback on YouTube (maybe other sites) on all browsers. The behavior is the same on all browsers, the video just does not start playing. I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem after the last Windows update, or if I might be experiencing some other kind of problem. I have tried all the obvious things, like turning off extensions, clearing data, etc... but again, this is affecting all browsers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

General Troubleshooting - things to try

1. Check if it’s system‑wide
  • Test another streaming site (Vimeo/Twitch or MSN news straming).
  • Play a local MP4 if you have one..If both fail → Windows media pipeline issue.
2. Disable hardware acceleration
  • Chrome/Edge: Settings → System → turn off hardware acceleration → restart. If YouTube works → GPU driver broke after the update.
3. Try a clean environment
  • Open YouTube in Incognito/InPrivate.If still broken → not extensions or profile corruption.
  • On a desktop web browser, simply open a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N or Cmd+Shift+N) and navigate to YouTube.
4. Check GPU driver status
  • Run dxdiag → Display → look for warnings.
  • Device Manager → Display adapter → check driver version/date.If a driver updated recently → likely the cause.
5. If driver is recent Roll back or reinstall GPU drivers
  • Device Manager → Driver → Roll Back (if available).
  • Otherwise install the latest stable driver from Intel/NVIDIA/AMD.Fixes most post‑update playback stalls.
6. CLEAN BOOT

Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. You have to use process of elimination to find which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

Repair Windows media components Run in elevated Command Prompt:

Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When complete restart. Then open command prompt as admin again and run sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair

7. Check the update itself
  • Settings → Windows Update → Update history.
  • Uninstall the update installed right before playback broke. If playback returns → confirmed update regression.
