  1. File Explorer Search Box in Win 11

I'm not a software engineer, but it seems like File Explorer is a hammer & chisel part of Windows. It amazes me that with all the horsepower Microsoft has, they can't make it work right. Especially considering it worked fine for years...

  3. Windows 11 Explorer, File Properties, How to Change the Rating?

It's just frustrating that we *had* something that worked fine, and Microsoft chose to hose it up, for no apparent reason...
  4. Windows 11 Explorer, File Properties, How to Change the Rating?

This is a Win 11 deal-breaker for me. I have spent literally THOUSANDS of hours on my mp3 tags. My 20,000 MP3's can be sorted by artist, song title, year, composer, genre or "rating". (or a combination of the above) My rating system: 5 stars -- Great song -- made Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100...
  5. File Explorer Search Box in Win 11

I upgraded to Win 11 and had to revert back to Win 10. The Search function in Win 11 did *not* work for me -- had trouble putting in search terms. It's been a while -- don't remember if I had issues hand-typing search terms or using copy/paste. Anyway, I'm able to get File Explorer search to...
  6. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

Just for completeness, I previously used regedit to try to change the file association list for jpg's HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\ Under the jpg folder, I added a new dword with the next letter in the list and the program I wanted to add.. This...
  7. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

I ended up figuring out how to solve this myself, thanks to Fix #6 on this webpage: https://thegeekpage.com/fix-file-type-association-error-in-windows-10/ The instruction I entered at the Command Prompt was: ftype jpegfile="C:\Windows\System32\mspaint1.exe" "%1" It shows up on "the list" as...
  8. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

In Googling possible solutions, I looked for articles that discussed doing reg edits to add programs on "the list". I found a few things but nothing that seemed instructive enough that I felt comfortable trying it...
  9. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

I tried restarting my PC to see if that would make it show on "the list" (after just downloading the program). Didn't make any difference. I also tried looking for the program in the Microsoft Store -- it's not there. Probably because Microsoft doesn't want to enable us to easily use retired...
  10. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

If I go to Settings>Apps>Apps & Features --------- Classic Paint is on that list. But all I can do from there is uninstall it...
  11. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

Yes, I'm able to do that. Just can't make it the default like I want...
  12. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

When I hover on a jpg file and click "Open with", Paint Classic is not on the list. I then click on "Choose another App" which brings a pop-up of alternatives. Paint Classic is not on that list either, and the "More Apps" link is greyed out.
  13. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

I also tried Settings>Apps>Default Apps where you can set defaults for applications. Neither the app Classic Paint or the file mspaint1.exe will show up on the list so you could set defaults on it.
  14. Solved How to select new default programs when the "More Apps" link is Greyed Out

I'm not a fan of Microsoft's reworked Paint program, so I downloaded Paint Classic as an alternative. It seems to work exactly like the old Paint program, so I'm happy about that. However, I can't figure out a way to make it the default program to open jpg files. When I hover on a jpg file and...
