  1. how can I create bootable Macrium rescue on 5TB GPT drive w/o destroying existing partitions

My backup drive is right on my desk, so it's easy to grab & go. Sure, I could stop worrying about ransomeware, but considering the frequency of attacks, I keep Windows's ransomeware filter on, to minimize the need to recover. I also keep the "my documents" folder in a separate partition on a...
  2. how can I create bootable Macrium rescue on 5TB GPT drive w/o destroying existing partitions

Admittedly, building a flash drive is easier, but if you have a fire and have to leave the house fast, grabbing the disk and running is the best bet (other than having an off-site backup/restore you can trust). And if you have as many USB sticks as I do, it's problematic to keep the 2 devices...
  3. how can I create bootable Macrium rescue on 5TB GPT drive w/o destroying existing partitions

So, if I understand correctly, if I want my GPT USB Rescue drive to be bootable and NOT have a boot menu on my system I just have to copy the Macrium\WA11KFiles\media\sources\boot.wim to the FAT32 partition on my Rescue drive and ONLY WHEN I want to boot from that drive, modify the boot order in...
  4. how can I create bootable Macrium rescue on 5TB GPT drive w/o destroying existing partitions

"Unsupported" does not mean it won't work properly. It just means they won't answer any questions, offer help or handle any problems if it fails. This same statement occurs for all kinds of programs in every operating system. It's just a limit of liability. It just means "buyer beware". As seen...
  5. how can I create bootable Macrium rescue on 5TB GPT drive w/o destroying existing partitions

So I'm a bit paranoid. I have 8 physical internal drives (4 HDD & 4 SSD) on my UEFI system (MSI Z390). My C: drive is a GPT 1TB SSD with an EFI System partition. I use Macrium 8 to backup my partitions onto a 5TB USB drive which is formatted as GPT. I'm assuming that the USB drive AND any of my...
  6. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

Yes, you have to delete (or at least rename) the upper and lower filters. But the mystery is how they caused this problem after MANY years.
  7. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

YES, YES, YES!!!! That did it! My Device Mgr driver had an error code 39 so I followed the instructions at Your CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows or other programs - Microsoft Support and they fixed it. In my case, there was no Upper Limit key, but I just renamed the Lower Limit key...
  8. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

That would be nice, but my Phanteks P600S has no front panel cutouts except the USB and audio ports.
  9. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

The driver properties show it knows there is a problem and it is the MS CDROM.SYS driver, dated 6/21/2006, so the latest update may indeed have caused that driver to be dropped. I'll have to see if I can find a newer driver on a trusted site. (PS. It's an LG Slim-DVD writer from 2014)
  10. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

I went to my BIOS and changed USB standby power (S4/S5) to ENABLED, rebooted and my front ports work now. The portable DVD player is still a mystery. Works fine on my laptop, but not on any desktop port. I *DO* have an exclamation mark for it in Device Mgr, but uninstalling and deleting the...
  11. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

Thanks. I probably should put the DVD on back burner. PS. My extenders (I have 2) are all externally powered. I learned that lesson many years ago!!
  12. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

It's not Blu-ray. Just an LG slim DVD writer/reader. Works well on my laptop and WAS working fine on my desktop. I have it plugged into a USB 3.0 extender which is plugged into a USB 3.1 my rear port. All my other USB devices work there. NOTHING works in my front ports.
  13. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

SFC found nothing. The above answer doesn't address the concurrent problem with my DVD drive. The drive appears to be seen by my BIOS. I'll have to see if it can try to boot from it to verify it really is visible. The keyboard and mouse are connected to the rear USB ports, so they work properly.
  14. USB 3 front ports stopped working AND DVD drive stopped on ALL ports

My Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631.2861, MSI MEG Z390 ACE BIOS 7B12v1B, 32GB RAM, Intel 9700K system was working fine until this past week (about Dec 16). The front USB 3 gen 2 ports do not recognize ANY USB device (USB 1, 2 or 3). My USB 3 DVD drive powers up in ALL ports but is not recognized...
