There is a rather convoluted workaround dated 3 December 2023 slightly below the middle of page 3 of this discussion, with a PowerShell version in the next reply. I run this PowerShell script using Task Scheduler every morning at 9am. This was the only solution I found that works for me.
I experienced the same thing using Word as part of MS 365. I use a dark gray theme and previously the document background in preview mode was a dark gray. I went back to a earlier version of MS 365 and the problem went away so I suspect the issue is part of an update, not sure which one.

They are links to quick templates. They show up on every new blank document. Once you type the first character they disappear. Have no clue how to disable them.
I had issues trying to install KB5058411....kept getting a message like "something didn't go as planned..". Reinstalling the current version of Windows solved my problem (see this link).
