What are the boxes in the middle of the Word document?
Is there any way to remove these?

By the way, I have tried online version and I cannot see those tabs. I am guessing you have opened some template?
If you simply do File New and select a blank template, issue might go away?

Hyper-V (a vm runs almost as fast as my older laptop)
They are links to quick templates. They show up on every new blank document. Once you type the first character they disappear. Have no clue how to disable them.
