2 sticks or 4 sticks of RAM

I read recently that installing 2 sticks of DDR4 3200 MHz 32GB would be better than installing 4 sticks of DDR4 3200MHz 16GB. I am planning on increasing my RAM from 32GB to 64GB and installing a faster Ryzen cpu (Ryzen 7 instead of Ryzen 5). Is this a better way for the ram?

Go with the cheapest set. Personally I don’t think it makes an ounce of difference, other than price. If the duel 32GB are cheaper, go with those.

I doubt that 2 DIMMs would be faster than 4.

However, stability is another issue. If you check the QVL (qualified vendors list) for the board, you may find that there isn't a lot of DDR4 3200 that Asus certifies with 4 DIMMs. You may be able to run fast RAM at a lower frequency. But, if you're buying new, I recommend 2 DIMMs.

Well, here's ten points, just for filling out your computer specs. :-)

As for RAM, however much RAM you want, get a TWO stick set.
The more sticks, the more chances for errors to creep in.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
checking RAM prices, which have increased massively, it looks like 4x 16GB sticks of DDR4 3200
are going to be a lot cheaper then 2x 32GB of DDR4 3200 at the moment.

thankfully i purchased my 2x 32GB (64 GB) of DDR4 3200 some 2 years ago
they cost then £111 a set and i purchased two sets for two computers.

An alternative: use 4X16 DIMMs that are slower than DDR4 3200.

You'll find some in the QVL.

You may not see a significant performance difference outside of synthetic benchmarks. That assumes you're not a gamer, trying to squeeze that extra 1FPS out of games.

The main advantage to having 4 16GB sticks as opposed to 2 32GB sticks, (assuming the rest of your system can handle either configuration without throttling) would come in encryption or compression operations, which require a LOT of RAM and/or virtual memory. If you're into video editing or creating your own .isos you probably would notice a difference, but otherwise, I'd go with whatever is cheapest.

Could you explain that further?

Either 4X16 (=64) or 2X32 (=64) would operate in dual channel mode. As far as I know, with the same frequency and timings, performance should be identical.
