24/7 vs 9-to-5

All of the bank and government computers that have all of my information are on 24/7 and connected to the internet. Just sayin'
They all have small armies of IT personnel to watch over their firewalls 24/7.

Why do I feel so naked all of a sudden? I don't even have a porno collection!

No, they don't. They aren't going to pay someone to effectively sit there and stare at a screen. Almost every single company has their servers running 24/7. The IT department for the company which I work for does not have our IT staff or anyone else watching our firewall traffic.

That's hard to believe, they all pay small armies of security guards to watch over their buildings 24/7 and they all don't do that for their servers?

I leave my desktop computer on 24/7, both at home and at work. I can't recall a single instant where I've received viruses or other malicious intrusions ever by leaving it on and online. The only few times that I've ever got a bug was from an action that I did, but my antivirus/spam software picked it up and it wasn't anything really bad. I am pretty good at hovering over links in emails before clicking on them and I stay off websites that are questionable.

Yes, it's true and again your security analogy is false. That is only true for a few select companies which can afford it. What's the point of having a firewall if you have to continuously monitor it?

Why hire a security guard if you already have a gate?

Well, just ask site owners (here and elsewhere) whether a webmaster is practical necessity for a number of reasons including security, in addition to having a firewall.

And yes, at home, I do play the 'webmaster' at least the best I can, and I can even recommend others to do the same, but to each his own.

With NAS and a load of hard disks (and cheap energy) I just keep the thing running 24/7 -- starting up and stopping frequently a load of HDD's and fans doesn't do them any good and certainly decreases their MTBF. The OS on this rarely needs updating either so it's fine to run 24/7.

With laptops - different issue - these days there isn't a "Start up" problem and LCD's (or whatever they call them these days) aren't like the old CRT things so no problem in lots of on / off switching. depends on what you use your laptop for -- modern ones are really tiny energy consumers so again your choice.

there's 8 HDD's in this NAS -- 2 X 2 in 2 RAID 0 arrays and 4 HDD's as a "Bunch of disks" (JBOD) giving a 20TB data space plus the 232 GB SSD for the OS and other bits and pieces.

Banks and governments (the original context) still pay IT pros to man their networks 24/7

I once chatted with a self-proclaimed hacker, an average website is like jumping through 1 or 2 hoops, government is 7 hoops :eek1:

manning networks 24/7 is different (ISP's, Amazon, Hospitals, Police, Fire. Netflix etc etc all do the same). However a lot of equipment can be dynamically added and replaced without switching off the network e.g blade servers and the like.

Even domestic computers can support some sort of HDD hot swapping with the right hardware.

I think the OP was referring to frequent switching off and on of individual computers which isn't quite the same thing.

BTW Govt firewalls are probably effective not so much because of the quality of the I.T staff but because things are so dis-organised generally that even those on site with 100% access haven't a clue where stuff is anyway.

I remember a few years ago doing a free lance I.T gig in the UK for the City of Sunderland for their highways dept. They were so chaotic and didn't even know that the A19 - one of the busiest main trunk roads in the UK where some Road repairing plant needed to be sent to was in their area !!!! They thought it was a Scottish road !! You really couldn't make that stuff up. !!!
