24/7 vs 9-to-5

I notice that some of you keep your machine turned on and connected to the net 24/7. Aren't you concerned of any unwanted ingress on Sunday 3 am ?

My own machine is basically on 9-to-5 duty, only connected to the net when it is needed.

I tend to keep my computers asleep or turned off when I am not using them. The only reason is really power consumption reasons. I'm not concerned about unwanted ingress at 3am. The NAT part of my router is going to stop ingress traffic anyway.

I keep mine on 24/7
I am not concerned about late night ingress.

Running 24/7/365, main reason being nothing is likely to kill electronics faster than that initial switch on burst of electricity.
Obviously there are points to made about economy, water pumps wearing out, fans sucking dust etc, but each to their own.
What late night ingress are you talking about, since the world has several time zones, late night for me is early morning for someone else, and vice versa, with shades of grey between. :)

I never had any PC that died on me because of the power switch for the past 20 years. And I think 99.999% of PC owners never had that issue as well
I personally just turn on and off my PC wherever I am. Even when I am not at home by talking to the computer itself.

My primary desktop is in my bedroom and I can't handle the lightshow from all the LEDs when I try to sleep. I hibernate my machine at night. I do the hibernation rather than a regular shutdown because Wake-On-LAN only works from hibernation and sleep on that machine

Haha thats a brilliant setup but i nearly spat my tea out when it started saying system initialised xD Thought i was in for the full RGB Rave cave with a song intro etc, Its not OTT though, I seen a guy on facebook that had his doing a full RGB disco display( Sadly not just his pc, but wall lights, bed lights and every other inbetween, it said his name etc and played him an intro song whilst his pc was booting, im sure it was coming from somewhere else but still, People like that need slapped in the head or a girlfriend lol

Those are really easy these days. I can just add more "actions" to the command and I can have my favorite song played as well, etc. Nothing is impossible with virtual assistant these days.

Oh yeah its easy enough to sort out, Literally hook up Alexa and away you go! His was automatic, He didnt't ask it to, He said system on and it turned into the batcave with song intros and his name being shouted xD
Personally, Pressing the button takes me 0.01 seconds so i see no need and it seems more hassle to me than the 0.01 seconds it takes me to press the button, FYI not against the voice activation etc ofc, Just the full room turning into a nightclub effort

3 AM ingress? usually I am awake at 3 am, but if I am not, the lid on the laptop is closed and the computer is doing what I am supposed to be doing, SLEEPING..... What ingress??

Come on, there is only one possible choice for a start up sound....

I turn mine on in the morning, off at night, connected to the net all the time. I never worry about anything as I got AV etc and feel secure

I leave all 4 of my systems on 24/7 and only 'sleep' the screens, not the devices. One of the systems serves a site that can be accessed at any time, so a 3 am access is common from one of my users that works nights.

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with viruses/spyware in many years, so it's all good.

Main Desktop on 24/7/365, unless a bad storm comes or power outage happens, then UPS takes care of the shutdown

Main reason is 1 i typically use it from 8am to 3am most days, then after 3am it does its scheduled macirum backup on certain days or other maintenance, then i wake up, and resume gaming or whatever task i wanna do the next morning. LEDs on don't bother me when i sleep, or the fan noise from Intel Stock Fan on my Intel 10700 (upgrading that as soon as i possibly can)

Dust wise not really that more sucked in than if it was 9 to 5 usage, which i used to have more hardware problems up til i started leaving on back in 2015, hardly any hardware issues at all since then by just simply leaving on

No virus or spyware ever these days, haven't had to deal with that aspect since 2005/2006

3am ingress doesn't bother me, if it wants to apply any missed Windows Updates at that time, its more than welcome to, or auto update any other program

I start my machine in the morning after breakfast; a daily Macrium Reflect backup shuts it down at 2:00AM. I do that just to give the machine a rest and maybe cut down on power usage. I can't see running it all night when I'm not using it. It's not for security reasons (maybe I'm just naïve?)

All of the bank and government computers that have all of my information are on 24/7 and connected to the internet. Just sayin'

I leave all of my computers run 24/7, never had any issues

On when I'm home, off when I'm gone or sleeping.
