24H2 update concerns

I have read this update depending on computer can take up to a hour and forty minutes, I see number of problems. If someone is impatient may think something is wrong may try to stop update.

Most have (like me) settings that uses least amount of battery of which is screen time out. I know the screen time out is off when I do a backup to external hard drive.

Lack of storage have read a big tempt file is left after install that may be in part of having a old windows file to restore previous version of Windows 11. I have read you will be sending a update to fix not being able to delete temp files but if resources are low some many not to be able to wait for update.

I thought I would pass on my concerns for others I just bought a new laptop that has a 1TB and 16 mg ram 17 14th generation, but many others do not have laptops like mine.

Can you plug your laptop into mains power? Problem solved.

You can still delete the "windows.old" file after upgrade but most are recommending you keep this for a week in case of any problems.

There is problem with Windows 11 24H2 and leaving 8.63GB in Windows Update Cleanup but this is a known issue and everyone has it and MS are aware of it.

I don't think you will experience any problems if your laptop is new.

It's not clear that's was the case as he referred to himself. There are already threads about updating to 24H2 and deleteing leftover files

It is a help forum. It is possible that I'm misunderstanding the post and they are asking for help. If they are, they need to make it more clear on what we can help them with.

Just trying to save some from trouble, hoping they will look into settings that need adjusting before 24H2 update comings and that this update will take some time to perform.

Thanks for the warning. As for me, the only computer that might get updated is my wife's new laptop. She doesn't really need it so I don't have a problem waiting for it to be offered to her through Windows Update and then only after the first released bugs are fixed. I'm not going to upgrade my Mini PCs unless I have to. The one mini I use as a media streaming server and I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get it working again if something does go wrong. I had enough trouble setting it up so I could access to it from my other computers.

That's why I set my laptop to simply switch off the screen, not standby when connected to AC power. I plug it to AC during the upgrade and when I want to see the progress I simply move the mouse and the screen switched on. You can temporarily set it to "never" so you don't have to move the mouse every few minutes. That said, the computer never standby, even if you have set it to, when installing updates or upgrading to the next version. Otherwise Windows would constantly be broken on laptops (and desktops since sleep is enabled by default).

I'm still running 23H2 on an unsupported machine (2016 Xeon), but is stable, fast, smooth.

I'm quite flabbergasted, at the number of peope, who first tried to install 24H2 insider, then the released 24H2.

Being an old Computer Scientist, one thing I know is, don't touch a new Windows version, until at least 30x days, after release.

Add to that, the number of people who don't have Copilot ready PCs, or whose CPU does not have POPCNT, but still trying install 24H2, must mean too many people, have too much time, to waste.

We have said in other threads, there is no known workaround to install 24H2 either new or upgrade on a PC without SSE4.2 support. I was thinking to try, on my test laptop 1st system specs, to do a clean installation by using a hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB to bypass SSE4.2 check for installation. Then before allowing it to restart for the first time, I would boot again to the hybrid USB and replace the 24H2 bootloader with the 23H2 bootloader that doesn't require SSE4.2 and IF it can proceed to the next restart, replace the bootloader as many times as necessary to finally see the OOBE screen (where you first configure Windows and create the user account). However, if SSE4.2 is used in many system files, I doubt it will even resume installation after the first restart, and unfortunately I haven't yet found time to test the above. IF the above method succeeds, hurray! Otherwise, I will stay with 23H2 until is obsolete and no application works on it (much like XP).

You can block the upgrade to 24H2 until you are ready to install it when time permits and you have prepared for it. Option 2 in the following tutorial is the easiest to follow I think. Just choose the correct version (23H2) of reg file that you want to stay on: -

Due to a morbid fascination, verified VM in place upgrade, from 23H2 to 24H2, using standard, tutorial from here.

Still won't upgrade main work PC, for at least 6x months.

Will observe the ensuing pandemonium here, from the sidelines, with popcorn.

Can't say I had the problem but I'm not on the insider but the "bog standard" 23H2->24H2 (2 updates to currentg Oct build).

That is a given, knowing that the 24H2 upgrade is a full in-place upgrade rather than the small Enablement Package used for 23H2. Factors that influence the time are the power of the processor (latest gen i9 vs any supported Atom/Celeron) and the speed of the system drive (SSD vs HDD).

Also a given is that letting Windows Update do the upgrade when offered is by far the slowest way to get 24H2, the fastest being a manual upgrade using an ISO. I documented the time to upgrade a modest spec machine when Windows 11 was first released....

Even if my computer was compliant, I don't trust Windows Update messing with my drivers while upgrading to 24H2. I would download the ISO and upgrade from there anyway.

This bug is about cumulative updates, and hopefully should be fixed at the next Patch Tuesday. However, even with this bug it can still clean up most things, and that includes the Windows.old after an upgrade. I know, I have had the upgrade myself and successfully cleaned up Windows.old.

This is supposed to make future updates faster because they will read data from the 8.63GB and modify as necessary. It is not a bug.

Decades ago, common sense approach, was re-install new version of OS.

I guess many believe now, "Micro$oft", are now OS experts.
