Attempted 24H2 Update

So after waiting a few months, I decided to let my spare laptop (which is identical to my main laptop) update to 24H2. I've been left with a black screen and a large white pointer. Hmm, I'll wait a bit longer and see if it rights itself.

It just had an install of 23H2 on it and no files or programs.

Is that pre load of Windows or post load of Windows (When it first starts up?)

I ended up switching it off and on again. It started doing something then and saying it was updating. Took ages. But does seem ok now. At least the touchpad works! Last time I tried 24H2 on this laptop, the touchpad wouldn't work.

Haven't really done much on it as yet to see if everything is working ok but have noticed a few annoying "flashy" things. Obviously something you get used to after a while. I just prefer my laptop screen to be stable and not flash things at me if I happen to move the mouse near the right corner.

Nope. It's no good. Turned the laptop on again later and screen flashing - now black screen again. This doesn't bode well if I have to upgrade to it in October. Maybe needs a different graphics driver - if I can actually see to change it.

If you get it running let windows update install any missing drivers.

On my own laptop I let it try to update from 23H2 to 24H2 via online update and it failed with some couldn't access memory location xxxx. error In the end I downloaded an install ISO file, made a bootable flash drive of that with Rufus and did a manual install from the flash drive. Install went fine and I'm having no issues with 24H2 — gripes? yes but no serious issues.

Thanks. Switching it off for a while meant I could get to the desktop again and I installed the latest Intel graphics driver. Windows update later suggested a different graphics driver, which I've ignored - because it did that recently on my main laptop and made it worse!

Anyway it seems to have settled down. I'm not sure if this is a 24H2 thing or a graphics thing, but I do find it a bit too "flashy" for my liking. I don't mean the screen flashes or anything, but things happen I didn't choose to happen!

Eg when having two windows open at the same time, moving one to read something underneath - they both automatically pinged into a kind of four square grid in the top two sections. Which made it smaller to read! And I had to work out how to get them out again.

Also the spotlight thing top right keeps opening if the mouse doesn't even go that close to it. And there is something at the top that keeps popping down a bit if the mouse is anywhere near the top. I just want a desktop that doesn't move unless I tell it to! As I say - it's kind of flashy!

I assume these are new features. Haven't used it much so far, but other than that seems ok (and a lot better than in Jan!). And I like the fact that "rename" is now an option at the top of the right click menu.
