Ok anyone still watching I found a YouTube video re this sort of problem but as it is obviously with the young fellow running Windows 7 I don't know just what to look for in the task manager in Windows 11? Any thoughts as he just pulled up applications and there was an app called messages running and he just ended that task and away went the blank square at the top of his screen.?? Sorry the video itself would not a ttach.

Having said that it was pure luck that I found out what was the problem. Still I expect anyone reading this thread will be aware and learn of the mistake I made and not do it themselves.
