Guys, I'm really hoping somebody can assist me here as I'm literally at my wit's end.

Sorry for the long background, but I've done a lot of testing w/these drives and I think the detail is important to understand the pickle I'm in...

I would REALLY appreciate some guidance here as I'm literally out of ideas.

Devices I'm working with:

1. PNY - 8TB PCIe Gen 3 x4 Internal Solid State Drive CS2130 Model:M280CS2130-8TB-RB
2. PNY XLR8 CS3140 4TB M.2 NVMe Gen4 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - M280CS3140-4TB-RB

Laptop - Asus Zephyrus Pro Duo 16 3080 TI model GX650RX-XS97.

Here's the problem. I started by an 8tb NVME in SSD Slot 1 : a Corsair MP400 8TB M.2 NVMe PCIe x4 Gen3 SSD installed where I loaded the OS. This drive works fine.

In SSD Slot 2 in installed the PNY 8tb (drive 1 from list above). My result: It appears in the bios fine, but once Windows 11 boots, when I try to access the drive I get the error "nvme a device that does not exist was specified". The drive can not be accessed, and shortly after it disappears.

Here are the logs I received in the event viewer:

Code:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort1.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.

Ntfs (Ntfs) - {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file D:$Mft. The data has been lost.

This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

VDS Basic Provider - Unexpected failure.

Error code: 1B1@01010003 Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs) - The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume9.

Failure status: A device which does not exist was specified.

Device manufacturer: Device model: PNY CS2130 8TB SSD Device revision: CS213531 Bus type: NVMe

After this fault, I pulled the drive and inserted the PNY 4tb drive (drive 2 from above), inserted into SSD slot 2 where i proceeded to move my OS partition install over (its a gen 4 drive, so would be faster than my gen 3 8tb, better for the OS). Things ran smoothly at first, then a few hours later I received a BSOD - CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. I attempted reboot, to find that the storage device no longer was recognized. When I placed the 4tb drive in my tester, it is registering as dead. This laptop bricked my 4tb ssd, costing me $735 in damage to my storage device.

So at this point, as this was a brand new laptop, I presumed I got a lemon, so I returned it to Asus for a refund. I then went with its sister laptop, the Asus Zephyrus Duo 16 3070 TI model GX650RW-XS96, expecting to get better results this time. I repeated the initial steps with the 2 8tb drives, same exact result on the SSD slot 2 drive. Needless to say, I did not repeat the 4tb process as I did not want to destroy another $735 drive.

I plugged in a 2tb into SSD Slot 2, worked fine, so I moved on...

From there, I purchased a ASUS ROG STRIX Arion Aluminum Alloy M.2 NVMe SSD External Portable Enclosure Case Adapter. I figured If I couldn't use the 8tb drive in my laptop, at lest I could get a good quality external enclosure to use it with. Again, same exact results with the ssd enclosure. It registered it, then proceeded to fault as if it were being rapidly plugged/unplugged. I then decided at least I could use it with the 4tb - same process as with my laptop - it worked for about an hour then disappeared (thank God it didn't bake though).

As I had a second 8tb and 4tb I tried these out as well - SAME result, proving its not an issue with my drives, its the devices I'm plugging them in to.

Finally, I went searching for a device that states does not have the LBA32 limitations (only reading 2tb max) and picked up a SABRENT USB 3.1 Aluminum Enclosure for M.2 NVMe SSD in Silver. Sabrent claims it can read a 8tb drive no issue. SAME result with this drive.

The hilarious thing is I have a UGREEN M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure USB C 3.1 which reads all my drives flawlessly. This little piece of crap with no thermal protection to speak of does a better job than my $4,000 laptop, this is absurd. I know factory specs state that it supports 2tb max, but ALL manufacturers state this, even if its not true.

And IF it were the case, why does it read my Corsair MP400 8tb fine in SSD Slot 1? Both slots have the same support.

I have an Aya Neo Next with a PNY 8tb installed, and it works perfectly, so I know SOME (very few) devices can actually use this drive.

I've scoured the web looking for anyone in my situation, hoping to at minimum find a 40gbps external NVME enclosure with good thermals for me to house my drives in, as I can't use them in my laptop.

I'm really hoping one of you has some good feedback for me, as I've exhausted trial and error, and am not interested in tossing any more cash at more external enclosures to find that they also don't support my drives. This is borderline insane with a well known brand like PNY...

I NEED to solve this puzzle, hopefully I will with your help. Seriously I have 2 $1k drives, and 2 $700 drives, and I literally cant find any device that can read them reliably and not break them!

Thanks everyone!

I JUST updated the bios firmware of the laptop before testing the drives, so its running fresh.

Also, it can't really be the laptop's fault if 2 different NVME enclosures do the same exact thing. Only my cheap-0 ugreen nvme enclosure works w/the drives (and my Aya neo next).

I can't even initialize the disk... gives me the "A device which does not exist was specified" error for the 8tb drive.

I could try formatting to GPT on the 4tb, but really though, would the difference in format cause the laptop to not break my drive after a few hours of no-issue use? I'm guessing if it were the format type, I would notice issues out the get-go, and not on a BSOD + blown out drive level...

When I put my 4tb in the Sabrent enclosure, I was running crystaldiskmark when it disconnected. Happened right at the write test init.

Edit:

I'm sensing that the real issue is that these devices don't like how the PNY drives are built. My Corsair 8tb works fine, so why not my PNY drives? Odd though because they share the same exact phison chip etc. Most of these NVME drives get all the same parts from the 1-2 big manufacturers.

Also, I just did a SMART health check on my 8tb and it shows 100%

Just as a FYI I posted initial detail on this thread:

but over the last week I've discovered things that render my initial thread irrelevant. As the focus is now on the drives themselves, the laptop info was simply a red herring. If this is sensed as a dupe, please feel free to close out/delete the other thread as this one contains the actual issue. Nothing at all to do with the laptop hardware...

Ok, so new finding. After playing with my 8tb in that Ugreen enclosure, and even that device starting to have issues keeping my 8tb online I started thinking through this issue...

It occurred to me that when I was having a hard time getting a 4tb drive to be recognized after it spazzed out after being connected to the asus or sabrent nvme enclosure, the way I got it back to life was to put it in my ugreen enclosure and take it over to my office pc and pop it into the usb hub.

It just now dawned on me... I popped the 8tb PNY drives in to the asus and sabrent enclosures and took them over to my office pc powered usb hub and plugged them in - without doing too much testing, they seem to work flawlessly. So the issue seems to be power delivery with these PNY drives.... power direct from the usb port of my laptop isn't enough to power them, and apparently not my ssd slot 2 of my laptop either, which is causing bad results:

my 8tb flat out does not stay connected (power delivery is likely just below threshold for the device to be recognized, but not to stay active)
my 4tb is recognized, but shortly after goes offline (4tb obviously demands a little less power than a 8tb would, which is likely why it vanishes after a spell).

My Aya Neo Next must have enough power delivery in the socket to push the 8tb to work.

As to why the 4tb dropped off after a bit, I was doing read/write tests - on write it disconnected almost immediately. Write demands greater power consumption, so this seems to clearly be the issue.

As to my laptop... maybe the power balance goes to SSD Slot 1 first, and the left over allocates to SSD Slot 2? This could explain why a 8tb in slot 1 works fine, but does not have enough power to drive a 8/4tb in slot 2 (option 1), or SSD slot 2 just has less power overall (option 2), or simply the corsair MP400 8tb just draws less power (option 3).

So I think I solved the mystery... but where to go next. Needing a powered hub to plug in a drive is absurd and far from convenient, so even though I think I figured out this riddle, I'm not left with great options.

Oh, and if what I discovered here is truly the problem, why the hell aren't people talking about this elsewhere? Seems that, if this is actually a thing, I'd have come across many reports regarding power delivery issues, if even only pinned on the PNY brand alone... =/

I have one of these guys coming... I'm going to pop the 4tb in the hub itself, and try connecting a 8tb to the hub to see how things fly:

Not the option I want, as my ssd's are pretty much going to have to live on my desk and not go portable which is really dumb... Still on the look out for a better solution.

One thing i was thinking could work is something like this:

of course it would need to be rated at USB 3.2 gen 2 for decent speeds though... can't seem to find anything like that out there. This would be a good option though as I could tap the power of 2 usb ports to run a drive... just one thought. IDK if anyone has other ideas, or a link to a good splitter cable that would do the trick here...

Well, the Acasis hub arrived today. Tossed the 4tb PNY in there, working fine. Plugged in my 8tb w/asus and sabrent enclosures into the usbc of the hub, both also work fine through the powered hub.

This is A solution, but not the solution I was hoping for. I'm still hoping somebody w/helpful info for me would advise on this issue. Either confirm/deny the power hungry theory i have for the PNY drives, and provide some additional detail on how I can more properly overcome this w/o the need of an external powered USB hub...
