I'm hoping somebody can tell me this is a good thing. I was trying to install an old Cyberlink Media Suite 10 program which originally came with my LG blu-ray rewriter and I got the following screen.

A driver cannot load on this device
Driver rikvm_38F51D56.sys
A security setting is preventing this driver from loading. You'll need to adjust your settings to load this driver.

bluraydrivermessage2.jpg

I assume this is a Windows 11 security measure reporting this.

I ticked the 'Don't show this message again' box and I'm no longer being bothered by this but I would just like to ask whether I am likely to get any problems on my computer or should I uninstall this software? When I do a search Windows cannot find the file so I don't know whether an uninstall would actually fix the issue.

I wanted to make use of the PowerDVD 10 program to play my old cine movies in mpg format. The program seems to run OK.

Please could anyone let me know if it's Ok to leave things as they are or not.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Annie

Is the driver signed? I think Microsoft has now introduced stricter driver signing requirements on Windows 10/11 which has now meant that older drivers may not load. If you need the driver to load and are sure it is the legitimate one then you should be able to whitelist that specific driver package.

I'm a novice so I do not know whether it is signed. How do I check please? The driver would presumably have been on the CD that I was loading the program from. The CD is asbout 10 years old. I am not sure which part of the complete media suite it is connected to and do not know whether I will need it in the future. I am more concerned about whether I will make my system unstable by having installed this program.

I don't know how to whitelist it unless clicking on the 'Don't show this message again' will have overriden the block, or whether it's wise to whitelist it in any case. I'm not able to see the pop-up window anymore after clicking the box and I do not know where I can look to see a list of drivers that my particular system is blocking, if that's at all possible. I wish I hadn't clicked the box.

Sorry that I am so ignorant on all these matters.

No, I doubt it because the driver isn't even able to load on your system. If the associated program is working as expected and isn't causing you any issues then I wouldn't worry about it. The option you selected just means that the warning dialog box won't be shown again if Windows attempts to load that particular driver.

The driver is probably signed but you can check with the following tool: Verify if System Files and Drivers are Digitally Signed in Windows

The driver package may be listed under the following registry key, if you open a command prompt window and then enter the following:

Code:
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\AppCompatFlags\Compatibility Assistant\Persisted"

It may or may not give you a list of file paths for the files which PCA came up for.

Thank you once again for your reply.

This was the result of the signature verification.

The log file makes no mention of the specific driver. Would this be because I never let it load?

The command prompt gave this result:
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

Many thanks for your help.

The filename is mentioned twice. I wonder if there are two entries trying to load it and the second one fails. As the program runs as you need it I would forget about it.

Thank you for your input. This software was installed by the shop who built my PC but I did a clean installation of Windows after this. The file couldn't have survived a clean installation, could it?

Since the above screenshot I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software and I am not getting this message but is this because it remembered that I ticked the 'Don't show this message again' box?

I cannot actually find the file on my system and it doesn't appear in a search of the CD that the program came on. Is this because it is a secret hidden file of some sort?

No, it wouldn't survive a clean install. Is your File Explorer view setting allowing 'show hidden items'?

I don't think 'don't show this message' would survive a clean install but it might survive an uninstall/reinstall of the program as it is Windows message, but I'm not certain.

You could always download Everwhere which is fast search tool.

@kelper

I didn't have Hidden items ticked but it made no difference when I did tick it.

I have left a message with Cyberlink although I'm not holding my breath that I'll get a detailed answer. If needed, I'll install the Everything program to see if anything shows up.

'Everything' will only show you if that sys file is on your system and its path. But it very useful for finding things as you can look for just documents, pictures, videos and other categories. It will find hidden files. No need to customise, it works well with the default settings.
