A driver cannot load on this device - message

I have a Windows 11 computer that started showing the following message:
1744292413874.webp

The weird part is that I can't find a 52433296.sys file on the computer. I did an attrib 52433296.sys /s from the root in an elevated prompt, but nothing is found.
Any idea how I track down what this is and properly fix it?

I'm in the process of scanning it with Malwarebytes.

dir /s /a C:\52433296.sys finds nothing.
I also searched the registry for 52433296 - nothing there as well.

It's bizarre. I have to assume that it's another driver that's loading this .sys file.

I just used Agent Ransack to search for 52433296.sys in every .inf file on the drive - no matches. How is it possible that a driver can try to load, but the .sys file doesn't exist and there's no mention of it in the registry or on the hard drive?

The computer has an AV running - I suppose it's possible the AV deleted the 52433296.sys file, but surely there'd be some sort of trace in the registry - if there isn't, how is Windows trying to load it? Bizarre.

Do you find drivers in Driver Store that don't appear in a Windows search? I don't.

They also appear in the Everything search tool.

I don't have a lot of .sys files that include no text in their names. Just one. (Not the same as the OP.)

No I do not. Usually it is never necessary for me to search windows as DSE gets me what I need without doing so.

To the OP, do you have any devices in device manager with a yellow exclamation point? You will have to expand all the categories to check each one for the flag. If you do not, it may well be an old driver for a peice of hardware you no longer have connected. Driver Store Explorer may lead you to what it is.

A legitimate driver wouldn't have a generic 8-digit filename. The probability of it being malware is high.

The vulnerable drivers blocklist is defined using two different methods:
- list of explicit filenames​
- list of SHA1 and SHA256 file hashes, in case someone renamed the driver file​

Checked that. Nothing in there. Nothing in the main AV logs either. Good idea though.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I've run multiple scans on the system and found nothing. My takeaway is that the AV must have deleted this driver, or Windows lost its mind. Just in case, I wiped the drive and reinstalled. Very strange, but sometimes there isn't an answer. :)
