A MEDICAT USB stick

I have been trying to make a bootable USB drive with a lot of diagnostic tools on it - MEDICAT - and when I try to install the software onto the drive I get a lot of messages ie not enough memory etc etc
I tried again to make the disk usable with DISKPART and in list disk there is small asterix against the disk number and am not sure of what that means. So can anyone explain just what that small asterix mean? I have already done everything to make this disk usable but with no luck it just doesn't show up in Windows explorer or is listed on the This PC so I am stuck now and don't know of what to do nest.

If you are talking about an asterisk in the very first column, this indicates that this is the currently selected item.

Try it:

Make sure you have more than one drive connected (plug in a thumb drive if you need to).
Perform a "list disk". Now do a "select disk 0" and then a "list disk". The asterisk will be to the left of disk 0. Now do a "select disk 1" followed by "list disk". The asterisk is now to the left of disk 1.

Ok H I will give it a go because the video for making this USB diagnostic tools is at first sight a must have USB to have loads of diagnostic tools made it like a normal and easy drive to make.
The one thing I see as a problem is that the drive as I said DISKPART sees the drive yet it doesn't show in the drives available in the Windows This PC app?

Diskpart should see any disk attached to the system, assuming that it is functional. However, tools like File Explorer won't show the drive if there are no partitions with assigned drive letters. I usually like to initialize a USB drive something like this...

Assume that I am already in diskpart and that disk 2 is the disk I want to work with:


Notes: In my example, I used NTFS. For bootable USB media, some systems don't like to boot NTFS formatted thumb drives, so you might want to consider FAT32 as a possible alternative. Also, on the line where I specify "assign", this will cause Windows to simply assign the first available drive letter. If you want to specify a particular letter, use this syntax (I specify drive letter Z in this example):

assign letter=Z

Finally, be aware that the CLEAN command wipes everything on that disk. Make sure there is nothing you need on that disk before you run this command!

Thanks H I will try it again at the moment I have another USB drive and it looks to be loading but I am not holding my breath though.

Let me know what results you get. I'm not familiar with MEDICAT, but if you continue to have difficulties, I'm willing to pull it down and give it a try. Maybe we figure out what the problem is together.

Thanks H I have a drive with software on board now all I need to do now is to test it after changing the BIOS to be the first boot choice. The software is described in this video and also this one Oh I forgot it is recommended that you temporarily disable your AV including the Windows security.

For anyone wondering what "Medicat Installer" is it seems to be similar to "Hiren’s BootCD PE (Preinstallation Environment)"

Ok H I think using a new USB stick has finally done what I want I am testing it later on today and will let you know how it goes.

Hello hsehesstedt I tested out the Medicat stick today and it finally worked. Now whether it was me doing the wrong thing an with several dropouts it installed onto a 32GB drive which just about filled it completely. I wished that 64GB drive was the one that it had installed on as it would have left a little more wriggle room but at least it is finished. It is going to be a handy tool to have though whenever I get problems with mine or friends machines.
