Hi,

I have an ASUS ROG Z790 HERO motherboard on which I am running Windows 11 Pro.

Can anybody recommend a SATA EXPANSION CARD/RISER that is fully compatible with the Z790 motherboard and with Windows 11?

The one that I used on my old machine was not fully compatible with my new set-up and I understand from reading around that there are some ongoing compatibility issues with SATA cards and Windows 11.

It’s to run a server type system for PLEX streaming and also to utilise standard high terabyte hard drives in order to backup video editing projects. The six SATA drives hold 4 SSD’s and two optical drives. One NVE slot is utilised for the boot drive running 11 Pro. You are right it is a great board and runs like a beast. In the future when they become cheaper I’ll populate the other NVE’s with high terabyte versions.

This thread is not that old, and these issues are not common, so posting here...

I have the same issue. A 8bay setup with 2 eSATA connections, and it is hit or miss if it works properly. Just setup this system last week, and things have been a bit rocky on the build/ install. But everything is up and running ALMOST. I am using the same PCI card from my last build, which is a Startech card with 2 eSata and 2 internal SATA.

This mobo has 2 TB4 connections, so I will get ESATA to USB-c cables and run it via the TB4, maybe that will be more of a stable solution? The card I am using is working, its just that I have 4 SSds, 2 are M2, and when I plugin a USBc thumbdrive, it locked up. Then rebooted, things were OK, but when I set to sleep at end of night, in the AM I came back and the system was on but no screen, no KB lights, the mouse lights were on, yet the system was locked up.

So there are some lane handling issues, either with Windows or the drivers...Maybe this card overlap is causing issues. SO my first that is to get those cables and take this card out.

Just an idea -- would a decent external multi-bay disk box be OK instead -- for multi-media streaming you don't need mega fast SAS type high speed file access / transfer.

Another suggestion is why use PLEX for streaming -- VLC does it FREE --personally I find the best way for streaming is to use KODI on a firestick type of device and just get data from the server via standard networking (SAMBA / SMB depending on whether your server is running Windows or a Linux type OS). KODI on the firestick also can have a load of IPTV's for live TV too plus you can sideload it with all sorts of Android apps so good for almost any TV whether smart TV or not that has a USB connection. I have a 20TB icybox connected to my server in a RAID 0 configuration -- with 4 X 5 TB 7200 Enterprise grade HDD's that run 24/7 -- fine for client backups multi-media etc etc.

For video editing fast disks are fine -- but another idea is to SSH into the server, and use the processing power of a seriously fast client machine to handle the editing -- but there's all sorts of combinations that are possible and suitable depending on requirements.

People often Diss RAID 0 -- but with modern HDD's it's safe enough and in any case so long a you have backup it's easy to re-build the array -- only needed to do that ONCE in 5 years !!! and that was my own silly fault not a hardwaware or computer software error. With MDADM software RAID 0 on linux you can aggregate different size (capacity) HDD's too -- so if you have some older different capacity HDD's you can use the entire storage rather than just aggregating the the smallest capacity value.

Cheers
jimbo
