General Add and Remove Favorites in File Explorer Home in Windows 11

  • Staff
Home_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add, remove, or clear and reset Favorites in File Explorer Home for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22593, Quick access in File Explorer (Win+E) is now called Home. The name Quick access has been repurposed for the pinned/frequent Folders section, and Pinned files is now called Favorites to align with Office and OneDrive. Recent and pinned files (Favorites) displayed in Home are now searchable using the search box in File Explorer even if they are not local files, so you can find Office files recently shared with you.

Home in the navigation pane is the default homepage of File Explorer (Win+E) that allows you to quickly access and view your pinned/frequent locations (Quick access), Favorites (pinned files), and Recent files from one location.

You can Add to Favorites and Remove from Favorites files you want in File Explorer Home.

Contents

  • Option One: Add to Favorites in File Explorer Home for Current User
  • Option Two: Remove from Favorites in File Explorer Home for Current User
  • Option Three: Hide or Show Favorites in File Explorer Home for All Users using REG file
  • Option Four: Clear and Reset Favorites in File Explorer Home for Current User in Command Prompt
  • Option Five: Clear and Reset Favorites in File Explorer Home for Current User in File Explorer

Option Three

Hide or Show Favorites in File Explorer Home for All Users using REG file

You must be signed in as an administrator to use this option.

This will not remove the Favorites section from File Explorer Home. It will only hide or show the pinned files (Option One) under Favorites instead.

1 Do step 2 (hide) or step 3 (show) below for what you would like to do.

2 Hide Favorites in File Explorer Home for All Users

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Hide_Favorites_in_File_Explorer_Home_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HomeFolderMSGraph\NameSpace\DelegateFolders\{3134ef9c-6b18-4996-ad04-ed5912e00eb5}]

3 Show Favorites in File Explorer Home for All Users

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Show_Favorites_in_File_Explorer_Home_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:

@="Recent Files Folder"

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 If Home in File Explorer is currently open, then refresh (F5) or close and open the window to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Option Four

Clear and Reset Favorites in File Explorer Home for Current User in Command Prompt

1 Open Windows Terminal, and select Command Prompt.

In Windows 11 22H2 File Explorer under "Home" I used to see headings "Quick Access" and "Favourites" with my various items listed under those headings. The same as shown in your screenshots above.
Now the two lists seem to have been merged into one large list with no headings as in my screenshot below.
Screenshot 2022-12-27 151303.jpg

I don't know how I managed to achieve this if indeed it was my own doing and I can't see a way to undo this.
Can anybody direct me as to how to revert back to the former categorised view?

Hello, :alien:

It appears the "layout" and "group by" folder view settings for "Home" have been changed. The "Group by" view setting is grayed out by default for "Home", so it's not easily changed.

If you like, you could use option one in the tutorial below to reset all folder views back to default that should include "Home".

I can't get 3 of my one drive favorites to clear/remove. I try deleting the file it then leaves a link to the one drive on the web which returns file doesn't exist since I just deleted it. I click remove and nothing happens. I have tried both deleting the app data file through explorer and via command prompt.

Hi Shawn,
Quick question: is there a way to programmatically (batch script, PowerShell, via Registry, etc.) add or remove files from Favorites?

This was possible in Windows 10 by adding shortcuts in “%UserProfile%\Links which would then appear in Favorites. But I think this is not the case anymore in Windows 11?

Thank you.
Seto

Hello Seto, and welcome. :alien:

That method would add them under "Recent", but I'm not aware of a way so far for pinned "Favorites".

Hi,
What file types may one add to the new favourites list?
It does not seem possible to add a shorcut.
Even though the shortcut in question shows "Add to Favourites" in the context menu when I right click on it, it never appears under Favourites.

Hello, :alien:

So far I haven't had any issues with using "Add to Favorites" on any file or shortcut to show under "Favorites" in "Home" like below. It does appear to add the shortcut's target source instead of the actual shortcut under "Favorites' though.

What determines the Favorites' sort order? At first, I thought I noticed that the last one opened would jump to the top, but that's not occurring anymore- or maybe I was mistaken all along. Now I have no idea how they're ordered. If I remove a favorite and re-add it, it goes back into the same position it was.. Not alphabetical. If I edit it, is stays in the same position. How are they supposed to be sorted? (Favorites- not Recents) Thanks.

Thanks! I'm looking at the date/time column which seems to be in descending order, but those dates/times don't correspond with the actual date created or date modified of each favorite. For instance, a .txt doc has date modified 5/20 and date created as 5/3 but when I add it to Favorites, in the date column of the Favorites it says 5/15. So something seems stuck.

I can't get 3 of my one drive favorites to clear/remove. I try deleting the file it then leaves a link to the one drive on the web which returns file doesn't exist since I just deleted it. I click remove and nothing happens. I have tried both deleting the app data file through explorer and via command prompt.
I get the same problem. I recreated the file structure and file name, and one of the files got removed. But, I still got one file that will not go away at all. Even on option five where I delete the file, it just recreates it and I end up with duplicate files in my recycling bin.

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

Does removing the file from the OneDrive folder prevent it from automatically getting added back under Favorites?

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

Unfortunately, it did not! I tried deleting it from OneDrive, pausing sync, and manually deleting the file from option five. It just re-appears. And right-click to remove from favorite doesn't do it either. When you click it, it'll say that it can't find the file.

Thanks for the welcome! :alien:

I was finally able to clear it after a restart. Your suggestion to completely clear it from my OneDrive while I paused syncing and deleted the file locally, did it.

After running the reg file "Show Favorites in File Explorer Home", File Explorer will now always crash when trying to press Home.

(I have just installed 23h2.)
